In the 1820's famous Russian architect Vasily Stasov took Quarenghi's dilapidated wooden arch construction and redeveloped it while at the same time preserving the essence of Quarenghi's original composition.
Stasov suggested building the arch from brick and using sheets of copper for the facade.

Vladimir Vasilievich Stasov Russian: Владимир Васильевич Стасов (1824–1906), son of Russian architect Vasily Petrovich Stasov (1769–1848), was probably the most respected Russian critic during his lifetime.
Stasov ardently supported the Peredvizhniki movement in fine arts and served as an elder advisor to the group of Russian composers known as "The Five".
He is known also for his opposition to music critic and erstwhile friend Alexander Serov concerning the relative merits of Glinka's two operas.

This brick, copper-faced monument was built between 1827 and 1834 by Vasily Stasov to replace the previous wooden structure (1814, architect Giacomo Quarenghi) that stood by the city gate leading to the town of Narva (hence the name).
Engraved in gold on the Gate are the names of the sites of decisive battles fought between 1812 and 1814, from Borodino to Paris, and the names of the 18 regiments of Russian Guards that took part in these battles.
