Vasquez Rocks have been used innumerable times in motion pictures, various television series and in moving and still photography advertisements, and continues to be used in them today.
The rocks' history began in prehistoric times when the sandstone rocks were uplifted at a picturesque angle, showing their jagged red features.

Lots of hiking trails and climbs from easy to difficult, a rustic ranger station is present, usually plenty of parking and picnic tables.
On a historical note, the area is named after Tiburcio Vasquez, a mid 1800's bandit/cattle rustler who used to hide out there with his gang.
He was eventually shot by one of his cronies (for fooling around with the man's wife), but was only wounded.

Please check the dates carefully for the Vasquez Rocks events - the park is normally closed at sunset and if you show up on the wrong Saturday, you'll be disappointed!
Enter, drive slowly, and follow the dirt road to the left for about 1/2 mile, over the little hill to the large open parking area.
