According to the Geophysics Laboratory director, seismologist Vassilis Papazachos, the 6.0 Richter quake is believed to be the main tremor, as those preceding and following it were all of lesser intensity.
Professor Papazachos told the ANA that the Arnea fault which produced the series of quakes was located near the major Lerissos fault, which caused a 7.2 Richter quake in 1932.
He attributed the abse nce of widespread damage to the fact that the Arnea fault is located in a sparsely populated area.

Both the Director of the Athens Geodynamics Institute, Giorgos Stavrakakis, and Seismology Professor Vassilis Papazachos put fears to rest, estimating that the 6.9 quake was the main one.
Answering to whether the Athens Geodynamics Institute had initially reported that the earthquake originated from Thessaloniki and was smaller in magnitude, he said that it was a very strong quake that rocked the country, while the Institute had to announce the magnitude within five minutes.
On his part, Professor Vassilis Papazachos underlined that his team had predicted today’s earthquake and its magnitude back in 2002, when they had published evidence in a scientific journal.

The tremor, which generated some alarm among the inhabitants of the region, caused cracks in the walls of houses in the village of Kleidonia and a partition wall collapsed in the primary school in the village of Vassilikos forcing it to close temporarily.
According to seismologist Vassilis Papazachos of the Geophysics Laboratory of Thessaloniki University, today's tremor was just one of several in the aftermath of seismic activity which began in the region with a quake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale on July 26.
Papazachos advised local inhabitants to remain calm, saying the quake was within the normal course of events given the pattern of seismic activity in the region.

Vassilis Papazachos of Thessaloniki University, who submitted his report to the National Scientific Committee for Evaluating Seismic Dangers last October, attacked those who made it public.
Kathimerini's report said Papazachos's midterm predictions, which had a margin of error of 18 months and 0.5 Richter, were aimed at increasing awareness in Greece's northwest and northeast and the southern arc stretching from the Peloponnese to Turkey.
Akis Tselentis, a seismologist at Patras University, charged that Papazachos was driven by the desire for more funding and had not submitted the report to the committee on seismic dangers.

According to Papazachos, the great danger in Greece comes from earthquakes themselves, although as he says, “we shouldn’t ignore tsunamis.” He believes a tsunami warning is essential and notes that the requisite knowledge exists, pointing out that the risk map was drafted two decades ago,
In areas such as California, says Papazachos, there are provisions for reshaping terrain, such as building barriers in areas under threat.

Vassilis Papazachos said the government had been urged to increase its anti-seismic protection measures, without this meaning that it was absolutely certain that very powerful earthquakes would occur.
Papazachos, a member of the research team, told reporters that the significance of the long-term quake prediction method lay in informing authorities about the regions at greatest risk, so that necessary precautionary measures would be taken.
Papazachos declined to name the high risk regions, saying only that they covered "the broader seismic area of the Greek region".

On the other hand, speaking on radio station NET 105.8, seismologist Vassilis Papazachos noted that no safe conclusions could be drawn for the development of the phenomenon, while he urged the State to implement all the necessary measures in the area.
Moreover, on Friday morning, seismologist Vassilis Papazachos told NET 105.8 that no predictions could be made safely over the development of the incident, while he called on the State to implement all the necessary measures in the eastern Aegean.

Aristotelion University Professor Vassilis Papazachos said yesterday's quake was an aftershock of Saturday's earthquake.
He said seismologists had been expecting an aftershock the magnitude of yesterday's quake since, according to statistics, the st rongest aftershock usually has an average intensity of an 1.2 degrees less than the main quake, although this did not necessarily occur after every large earthquake.

Vassilis Papazachos of Thessaloniki University and his team sent a confidential report warning of powerful quakes in the midterm to the National Scientific Committee for Evaluating Seismic Dangers.
In the report, Papazachos stresses that he is not trying to forecast earthquakes, which would have a practical value — such as predicting the day, epicenter and magnitude.
The warning, he wrote, was aimed at bolstering anti-seismic preparations.

ekathimerini.com | Expert blasts quake measures
Successive Greek governments have adopted a blinkered approach to forming a coherent and forward-looking policy on earthquake protection mainly due to fears of harming tourism, one of the country's top seismologists told Sunday's Kathimerini.
In a scathing attack on the state, Professor Vassilis Papazachos said that there is enough expert knowledge to predict the approximate force and location of any earthquake that will occur over the next five years but the government seems unwilling to take the advice on board.
The professor identified the lack of a program for pre-seismic checks on buildings in areas prone to quakes and the absence of a tsunami warning system for Greece - the most seismically active country in Eurasia - as key issues which need to be resolved.
