Barra and Vatersay are the Southernmost inhabited islands of the Outer Hebridies.
Barra is the larger of the two islands lying to the North of Vatersay, being approximately 8 miles long and 5 miles across.
While Barra and Vatersay are the two populated islands in the southernmost Hebrides, there are numerous unpopulated islands, lying to the South of Vatersay and the East of Barra.

The immediate reaction to the causeway saw the population rise from 65 in 1988 to 83 in 1993, and planning applications soar from a mere two in 1985-9 to 24, including four new houses, in 1990-3.
Vatersay has been for decades the most southerly inhabited island of the Western Isles.
The Vatersay Causeway, which was in full use by July 1991, remains an exception to the rule of Western Isles causeways in that it has never been formally declared open.

The islanders of Vatersay had to rely on a ferry service before the causeway was completed in 1991.
The monument which stands over Vatersay west beach (area 6) is a lasting reminder of the tragic shipwreck off the ‘Annie Jane’ which went on the rocks on this beach on 28th September 1853.
The amentities on Vatersay are limited but the community hall is open in the summer months for teas and coffees and the friendly service is second to none.
