Vatsyayana Vatsyayana: Writer of the famous treatise on love, the Kamasutra.
Two thousand years ago, sage Vatsyayana wrote his landmark manuscript, the Kamasutra (erotic codes).
Page Last Updated: December 24,2006 The author establishes that the erotic arts spread all over India are not just based on the famous Kamasutra of Vatsyayana.

Vatsyayana's Kamasutra as an ancient acknowledgement of holistic living
Indeed, Vatsyayana's list of the arts to be cultivated by a man and a woman, as essential to the fulfilling experience of kama, is so very long that one might feel discouraged in ever hoping to be a successful lover.
Vatsyayana is thoroughly realistic in advising that one should mate with one's own type, of temperament and feeling, and also physical make-up.
Above all, Vatsyayana says: "At all times, the man must carefully observe every action of the woman he loves, and so gauge her passion and preferences, and act accordingly, to give her the greatest pleasure." Nothing is to be hurried; nothing is tobe forced.

A Treatise on Erotics   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Vatsyayana states in the very beginning of his work that at the very outset, Prajapati Brahma, the great Brahma Pitamaha, the creator of all beings in the world had composed of his own for the purpose of the welfare, prosperity and preservation of his created beings a large encyclopedic work in one hundred thousand chapters.
Vatsyayana himself had admitted that the original work of Babhravya Dattaka was his basic source and the groundwork of the original treatise of Babhravya Dattaka had prompted him conveniently to plan out the entire topic.
Vatsyayana's assessment of Babhravya does obviously furnish us with certain evidence regarding his date and period; true it is that Vatsyayana belonged to a very ancient period, but how ancient is that period we have yet to ascertain.

The Kama Sutra of Vatsayayana: Introduction
It is impossible to fix the exact date either of the life of Vatsyayana or of his work.
It is presumed that he called his work after the name of his absent mistress, or the word may have some connection with the meaning of her name.
This commentary was most useful in explaining the true meaning of Vatsyayana, for the commentator appears to have had a considerable knowledge of the times of the older author, and gives in some places very minute information.

Essentially, I was greatly struck by the fact that Vatsyayana wrote this book almost 2,000 years ago, in what must have been a male-dominated society even then, and yet the book is extraordinarily sensitive to the needs of a woman.
The Kama Sutra’s constant refrain is that a man should do that which pleases a woman, that she is a person too and that, in the expression of desire, men and women must be equal partners.
Vatsyayana is very sensitive to the evocation of erotic moods.

Almost nothing is known about the writer, Vatsyayana, or the exact date he wrote this work.
(because Vatsyayana deals with the subject matter of human sexuality in a frank and forthright manner), it is a shame that this restriction must be applied since this site is clearly non-prurient in nature.
Thus, many of the subjects and cultural practices Vatsyayana discusses are very alien, and even bizarre, to our frame of reference.

According to the Kamasutra, all of these aspects of the life of a human being, should be of equal importance, without any of these spheres taking precedence over the others.
Mahadeva (the High-Deity Shiva) compiled the ten thousand chapters which in turn were compressed into five hundred chapters by Shvetaketu, a teacher of philosophy and the son of Udalaka.
The Kamasutra was transcribed by Vatsyayana in the form of Sutras written in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian tongue, which even today is a living, academic language.

rediff.com Special: Ashok Banker reviews Sudhir Kakar's new novel, Ecstasy
In the course of narrating incidents from Vatsyayana's life, Kakar used the opportunity to explore the psyche of sexuality.
He dealt not just with the life of the great sage, but also with the politics of man-woman relationships, analysed folklore and legends, explored the intellectual and physiognomic basis of sexual attraction and behaviour.
It was only natural that his novel would carry his psychoanalysis a step further: It was almost as if he had placed Vatsyayana on his patient's couch and was rigorously psychoanalysing the man! It was, by and large, successful because sexuality is a complex topic well worth exploring and discussing.

Varma underlines that Vatsyayana wanted to take men's innate sexual instinct to a fine art, but he laughs aloud when asked why, when you leaf through Kama Sutra, all it raises is your basic instinct?
