Vatted Malt is a whisky which is blended from a number of different single malts from different distilleries.
The term "vatting" is used to describe the blending process—and does not automatically equate to a vatted malt.
Vatted malts or pure malts are to be reclassified as blended malts as part of a process to standardise Scotch whisky descriptors set out by The Scotch Whisky Association, which represents the majority of Scotch whisky distillers in the industry.

Malt whisky has been born out of the culture and the history of the various distilleries is tightly bound with the history of Scotland as a whole (okay we can argue about the modernity of the malt distilleries).

Since so few distillers malt continue to malt their own barley, the injury is mostly a thing of the past.
After Diageo's Cardhu fiasco with a "Pure Malt" vatting replacing the previous single malt (then putting it back) the Scotch Whisky Association came up with some new terms for blended scotch whisky, blended scotch malt whisky, etc. and this term "triple malt" seems to be out of order.
I'm not sure I like the new terms but pure or vatted malt was always confusing before (a combination can't be pure by definition and even single malts are vatted before bottling).
