The Vaucluse is a département in the southeast of France.
The Vaucluse was created on 8 December 1793 out of parts of the départements of Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme, and Basses-Alpes (later renamed Alpes-de-Haute-Provence).
The Vaucluse is bordered by the Rhône to the west and the River Durance to the south.

The western third of Vaucluse belongs to the Rhone valley, and consists of the rich and fertile plains of Orange, Carpentras and Cavaillon.
To the east, with a general west-south-west direction and parallel to one another, are the steep barren ranges of Ventoux, Vaucluse and Lubron, consisting of limestones and sandstones.
The Vaucluse chain does not rise above 4075 ft. The most southerly range, that of Lubron (3691 ft.), is rich in palaeontological remains of extant mammals (the lion, gazelle, wild boar, andc.).

The department is named after mounts and fontaine de Vaucluse, the source of the river Sorgue, a resurgence springing in a narrow closed valley (Vallis Clausa), which inspired the Italian poet Petrarch.
In 1800, the canton of Suze was incorporated to the department of Drôme, recreating the enclave of Valréas.
The logotype of the General Council of Vaucluse is made of a blue square charged with a "fuzzy" white V. A dark yellow vertical stripe is placed along the left side of the square, from which it is separated by a white fimbriation.

North out of the village, the GR91 crosses over the western end of the Plateau de Vaucluse, passing a maze of local hiking trails, and follows the edge of the plateau up past Venasque and Methamis before splitting into branches that go into the Gorges de la Nesque or the Ventoux mountains.
