Vault - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In architecture, a vault is an arched structure of masonry, forming a ceiling or canopy.
But with the reintroduction of the groin vault, more light could be brought into the buildings: instead of building groin vaults as the intersection of two barrell vaults, the master masons simply built one long line of groin vaults.
Soon after this development, architectural taste in Europe swung in favor of the Gothic arch, which was pointed instead of rounded.

Cathedral architecture of Western Europe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the influences on church architecture was the mausoleum.
The ornamentation serves to define separate architectural units, rather than to merge them, eg the vertical stages are separated by horizontal courses, the horizontal bays are defined externally by attached shafts, internally the arcade is separated from the clerestorey level by a cornice.
The various parts of the building are united by architectural features and decoration which emphasise a verticality of design, eg there are shafts attached to the columns which commence at the floor and carry upwards through all the vertical stages (arcade, triforium and clerestory) to become the ribs of the vault.

 Gothic Art And Architecture
The problem was that the heavy stonework of the traditional arched barrel vault and the groin vault exerted a tremendous downward and outward pressure that tended to push the walls upon which the vault rested outward, thus collapsing them.
A crucial point was that the outward thrust of the ribbed ceiling vaults was carried across the outside walls of the nave, first to an attached outer buttress and then to a freestanding pier by means of a half arch known as a flying buttress.
At the technical level Gothic architecture is characterized by the ribbed vault (a vault in which stone ribs carry the vaulted surface), the pointed arch, and the flying buttress (normally a half arch carrying the thrust of a roof or vault across an aisle to an outer pier or buttress).

 Architecture and Geometry
A vault, in architecture, is an arch-shaped structure, usually of masonry, used as the ceiling of a room or other enclosed space, as the roof of a building, or as the support for a ceiling or roof.
The annular vault is similar to the barrel vault, except that the passage within it is not straight but curved, giving the entire structure the appearance of a portion of a ring.
In the simplest form of groined vault, the two conjoined vaults are of the same size and the floor of the vault is square; if the vaults are of different sizes, however, the floor of the vault is rectangular and the two areas of the ceiling between the groins are of unequal shape and size.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Gothic Architecture
the expedient was adopted of constructing half-barrel vaults springing from the aisle walls and abutting against the vaults of the nave beneath the lean-to roof.
Barrel vaults were occasionally used, groin vaults in innumerable cases; the groin vault with ribs first occurs in Durham in 1093, an astonishing date, since the earliest ribbed vault claimed for France is in the diminutive church of Rhuis, a structure the date of which is unknown, but is placed at about 1100.
The era when architecture was to be the favourite mode for the artistic voicing of a civilization was, at least in the South, nearly at an end; painting and sculpture were to take its place, and therefore the Gothic architecture of Italy was to remain both racially alien and in its nature episodical.

AllRefer.com - vault : History of Vaults : Gothic Vaulting (Architecture) - Encyclopedia
Ribs to strengthen the groins and sides of a cross vault were first employed in the Church of Sant'Ambrogio, Milan (11th cent.).
onward, helped to overcome the difficulties of vaulting oblong compartments exclusively with semicircular sections and to bring the various ribs of unequal spans to a crown at the same height.
Some vaulting compartments or bays were divided by ribs into six segments and were known as sexpartite vaults, but the four-part vault generally prevailed.

 Gothic Architecture
By the 12th century, architects realized the superiority of the groined vault compared to the barrel vault and started to add ribs, which were used to support the weight of the vault.
Cross-ribbed vaulting functions in much the same manner as plain groined vaulting, except that it is reinforced with ribs, and can be made much thinner.
The vault uses a diagonally reinforced arch resting on thin pillars, permitting the walls to be hollowed out (and thus, filled with windows), while also allowing the vaults to extend higher.

CITI: Projects : Advanced Packet Vault
The goal is to permit the Vault to archive all traffic found on a fully-loaded 10 Mbps network segment, and to permit the Vault to run for extended periods of time without supervision.
At such speeds, simply scaling up the current Vault architecture may not be feasible, and will require use of robust mass storage technologies to deal with data volumes of about a terabyte per day.
At such speeds, scaling the current architecture will not be feasible, requiring instead the investigation of: parallelism in the data pipeline, multiple mass storage devices, a parallel architecture in which groups of Vault engines cooperate to cover a high-speed network, and distributing packets equitably among the available engines.

The Data Vault architecture has stood the test of time, and has been stable (no changes or adaptations to the architecture) for over 10 years.
There are many supporting mathematical algorithms behind the formation of the Data Vault architecture, most of them are related to temporal mathematics and the abstraction or application thereof to a data modeling / data architecturally based system.

Dan Linstedt.com - About the Data Vault
With a Data Vault this is not the case, typically new functional areas of business are added quickly and easily, changes to existing architecture take less than 1/2 the traditional time, and usually have much less impact on the downstream systems.
The Data Vault provides a series of standard fields which track data changes by date, and where they came from - and the Data Vault is always modeled to hold the lowest possible grain of data from the source systems.
Thus, allowing a single active data warehouse (Data Vault model) to be built as a statement of fact, and each of the data marts can represent their own "version of the truth" based on a single sourcing point.

Ribbed vaults are structurally more efficient than a barrel vault that evenly distributes the weight and thrust along the wall.
A ribbed vault directs thrust to specific points in the masonry--where the ribs meet the wall at the clerestory level.
