Vault (sculpture) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The work of sculptor Ron Robertson-Swann, Vault is an abstract, minimalist sculpture built of large thick flat polygonal sheets of prefabricated steel, assembled in a way that suggests dynamic movement.
Commissioned by the Melbourne City Council in 1978 for the newly built Melbourne City Square, the sculpture was not even built before it began to attract criticism from conservative media and council factions, on the grounds that its modern form was felt to be unsympathetic to the location.
In 1981 Vault was re-erected at Batman Park (named after John Batman) and remained there in neglect and obscurity until 2002 when it was restored and moved to its current Southbank location.

Yet we are surrounded by sculpture in its manifold forms all our lives: from the sparkling fountains in parks and the bronze statues celebrating our heroes to the tombstones, plaques, and memorial columns in cemeteries to the croziers, chalices, tabernacles and sacred book covers in church right down to the coins in our pockets.
Rayner Hoff's sculptures for the Sydney and Adelaide war memorials, Paul Montford's sculptures for Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance and Daphne Mayo's work on the Brisbane Town Hall were all historic and fairly conservative art.
Zimmer says that during the 1980s there was a reawakening of interest in sculpture as public art and, for the first time since the 1800s, some sculptors managed to live by their work.

Sculpture Community - Sculpture.net - Sculpture sets record at auction
I agree that Brancusi took sculpture to a new level with his art, and thus that it is right to be celebrated by such recognition.
I agree that recognized artists tend to be old and I believe part of it is related to the fact that they have a curriculum and that galleries see this as a guarantee of their investment into the artist.
Brancusi's sculpture, or any other modern work that has been priced and valued under the present system, runs the risk of becoming devalued when the ones inflating the prices no longer call the shots.

Goldsworthy expresses his frustration at being unable to complete his sculpture in time, but he also recognizes that his work occurs at the “edge of collapse” (an idea he returns to several times during the documentary).
The driftwood is arranged in an open-ended, coiled spiral, a spiral that reflects both upward movement and the swirling movement of water inside a tide pool.
After Goldsworthy completes the sculpture, the camera follows the spiral sculpture as the incoming tide first lifts the nest sculpture from the wet ground, and then carries it around a bend in the river, to re-integrate the materials used to create the sculpture back into nature.

 Gothic Architecture
Gothic sculpture is linked to the rise in Gothic architecture, which began at the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis (fig.2) in about AD 1130, then spreading to the cathedrals of Sens (1140), Noyons (1150), Senlis (1151), Paris (1163), Laon (1165), and Chartres (1194).
By the 12th century, architects realized the superiority of the groined vault compared to the barrel vault and started to add ribs, which were used to support the weight of the vault.
The vault uses a diagonally reinforced arch resting on thin pillars, permitting the walls to be hollowed out (and thus, filled with windows), while also allowing the vaults to extend higher.

 Gothic Art & Architecture
The problem was that the heavy stonework of the traditional arched barrel vault and the groin vault exerted a tremendous downward and outward pressure that tended to push the walls upon which the vault rested outward, thus collapsing them.
A crucial point was that the outward thrust of the ribbed ceiling vaults was carried across the outside walls of the nave, first to an attached outer buttress and then to a freestanding pier by means of a half arch known as a flying buttress.
At the technical level Gothic architecture is characterized by the ribbed vault (a vault in which stone ribs carry the vaulted surface), the pointed arch, and the flying buttress (normally a half arch carrying the thrust of a roof or vault across an aisle to an outer pier or buttress).
