		On paper at least, that sounds a bullet-proof theory: the VX220 Turbo costs £25,495, does 150mph and is indeed so much faster than the Elise which spawned it that the two cars no longer appear to operate in the same ball park.
		The Vauxhall’s steering now weights up less than it did, but it’s still heavier than an Elise’s helm, and although it is responsive and communicative in isolation, the VX is not quite as delicate or rewarding as the Lotus over a great road.
		A safe diet of predictable understeer is, unfortunately, the trade-off that’s been made for making the VX Turbo such a friendly drive near the limit, but it’s also what separates it from the Elise as a car for enthusiasts.

		It's hugely satisfying to be able to impose yourself on the Vauxhall like this and it means that even boring journeys can be injected with a bit of magic if a quiet roundabout suddenly looms large.

		Vauxhall achieved the feat with the original VX220, as we found when we tried it out on the road and as part of a track day feature, and it has done it again with the Turbo version.
		In standard form the VX220 shares its underpinnings with the Lotus Elise but uses the 2.2-litre engine also found in more sedate Vauxhalls such as the Astra and Vectra.
		For that reason there are fewer thrills to VX220 driving than you might expect, but there's a deeper pleasure in driving a car which is as capable as this one.
