It was Vauxhall's version of the family of small "T-Cars" from Vauxhall's parent General Motors (GM); the family included the Opel Kadett in Germany, the Isuzu Gemini in Japan, the Holden Gemini in Australia, the Chevrolet Chevette in the United States and Brazil and a badge-engineered Pontiac Acadian/Pontiac T1000 across North America.
The Viva remained in production until the end of 1979, when the Vauxhall Astra was launched, while the Chevette remained on sale for another four years until a few months after the smaller Vauxhall Nova was launched in 1983.

The Viva was again revised in 1975, with trim levels becoming the E (for Economy), L and SL.
The E was Vauxhall's answer to the Ford Popular and was first offered as a promotional edition 2 door coupe using surplus Firenza body shells, before becoming a permanent Viva model in 2 door saloon form.
In New Zealand, the Viva was re-named as the Magnum 1300 in 1975.

 Vauxhall Viva & Firenza (Walker)
During the 1973 and 74 seasons, the choice of Vauxhall racing saloons was down to the Firenza or Viva, both being basically the same but with different rear styling.
Vauxhall Firenzas (a coupe version of the Viva) were a popular choice for Special Saloons because their suspension and engines were basically sound and did not require the massive investment needed to get them into race trim like other cars.
Firenzas usually had similar front ends to their Viva cousins; the version shown here is a 'Droop Snoot, only 204 were built, which was a competition version with a bolt-on plastic front with a spoiler and covered twin headlights.

 The rivals: Vauxhall Viva
In September 1963, the announcement was made that Vauxhall was to return to the 1-litre economy market with an entirely new two-door saloon called the Viva.
The Viva did however look very much like the Opel Kadett (Did someone mention badged engineering?) However a new 1057cc cast-iron engine, that shared the stroke as the Kadett would be fitted, but it would have a larger bore.
BMC thought that with Vauxhall announcing new models it would loose out, mainly because Vauxhall were offering a model for all classes of people.

Vauxhall, which was founded in 1857, and which GM purchased in 1925, just celebrated its 100th year of automobile production last year, but in fact Vauxhalls have just been badge - engineered Opels since 1979.
GM never made much of an effort to import Vauxhalls to the US, but in the late 50s and through the 1960s, Vauxhall was one of the most popular import brands sold in Canada, beating out even the mighty Volkswagen Beetle in sales for a year or two if I recall accurately.
Vauxhalls were sold by a Pontiac dealers, while the virtually identical Envoy (GM has recycled the name recently for a mid - size SUV line) were sold through Chevrolet dealers.

Vauxhall, the car, was named after a town in South London, where its first 5 horsepower model, costing £136 (more than $7,505 today), rolled out of a tiny workshop.
It was not until the launch of the Viva in the summer of 1963 that it re-entered the small family car market.
