Vaygach (Вайгач) lies in the Barents Sea region of the Russian Arctic, lying a few kilometers across the Yugorsky Shar Strait from the coast of northwestern Russia, and northeast from the mouth of the Pechora River (sediment plumes from the Pechora River are just visible at the bottom-left corner of the above image).
Vaygach measures around 100 km in length with a width of up to 45 km and covers an area of 3,398 km²;.
Vaygach is a continuation of the Pay-Khoy mountain range (bottom-right of the image), and on a larger scale is part of the Ural Mountain belt that runs from the southern Russia up through to Novaya Zemlya in the far north.

It separates the Barents Sea on the W. from the Kara Sea on the E. With Vaygach Island, between it and the mainland, Novaya Zemlya forms a continuation of the Pae-Khoy hills.
Vaygach is separated from it by the Kara Strait, 30 M. wide, and from the continent by the Yugor or Ugrian Strait, only 7 M. across.
On the E. coast of Novaya Zemlya, especially between the Matochkin Shar and 75° N., there are a number of fjord-like inlets—such as Chekina, Rasmyslov and Medvizhiy bays.

He reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya, and followed it northward, being finally forced to turn back when near its northern extremity.
In the following year he commanded another expedition of seven ships, which made for the strait between the Asiatic coast and Vaygach Island, but was too late to find open water; while his third journey equally failed of its object and resulted in his death.
On this occasion he had two ships, and on the outward journey sighted Bear Island and Spitsbergen, where the ships separated.
