Vayu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the words for air (vayu) or wind (pavan) it is one of the Panchamahabhuta the "five great elements" in Hinduism.
The five Vayu deities are known in the classical literature as Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana, and Samana, and control life (and the vital breath), the wind, touch/sensation, digestion, and excretion.
In another episode, Vayu is said to be the only deity not afflicted by demons of sin who were on the attack.

Vayu roams all over the earth and the heavens though his home is in the north-west, a quarter which he rules exclusively.
Vayu, being vindictive and violent, strived to do this for a full year, blowing hard continuously at the Mount but it was nobly defended by Garuda who spread his great wings and took the brunt of Vayu's force, thus shielding the mythical peak.
Another offspring Vayu engendered is Bhim, the third son of Kunti, one of the two principal mother figures of the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

The Vedic deity Vayu is not a common term within western society, but is one of the most important deities especially pertaining to health and manifestation of the physical body.
Vayu would be one of the first movements from the soul, (Purusha, paratman, Surya, Brahman), which is often referred to as prana.
The relationship between Vayu and yoga cannot be denied as it quickly becomes once the connection between Vayu and prana is established.

 Brahma Sutras by Swami Sivananda
In the Chhandogya Upanishad Vayu is said to be the general absorber of the Devas, "Vayu indeed is the absorber" (IV.3.1); Prana is said to be the general absorber of the organs of the body, "Breath indeed is the absorber" (IV.3.3).
In the Samvarga Vidya of the Chhandogya Upanishad, meditation on Prana with reference to the body and on Vayu with reference to the gods is prescribed.
Therefore, the Purvapakshin maintains that the two meditations can be combined and that Vayu and Prana are non-separate because in their true nature they do not differ.
