Manas: Religious texts of India, Puranas
Around the time when the puranas first began to be composed, the belief in particular deities had become established as one of the principal marks of the Hindu faith, and to some degree the puranas can be described as a form of sectarian literature.
Among these puranas, the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana (also known as the Bhagavatam) are, with respect to their standing as works of devotional literature, preeminent; and the Bhagavata Purana is even the supreme work of Krishna devotional literature.
The Puranas are works that most eminently represent the deep mythic structuring of Indian civilization, and they are properly viewed as expanding upon, modifying, and transforming the orthodox Brahminism of the Vedas, principally by the introduction of the idea of bhakti or devotion.

In the Vayu Purana their mother is said to have been Krodha, `anger.’ The Bhutas are attendants of Siva, and he is held to be their king.
In the Puranas also he appears as a patron of the enemies of the gods, and it was by his favour that the Daitya King Bali obtained that almost universal dominion which required the incarnation of Vishnu as the dwarf to repress.
To these particulars succeeds a life of Krishna, which is word for word the same as that of the Vishnu Purana; and the compilation terminates with a particular detail of the mode in which Yoga or contemplative devotion, the object of which is still Vishnu, is to be performed.

Evolution in the Vishnu Purana by Rudi Jansma
Traditionally, a Purana covers five distinct topics: 1) the creation of the universe; 2) its destruction and renovation; 3) the genealogy of gods and patriarchs; 4) the reigns of the manus, forming the periods called manvantaras; and 5) the history of the solar and lunar races of kings.
All eighteen Puranas are written in verse, in the form of a dialogue between teacher and pupil.
In this Purana, Vishnu is the pervader, present in everything, cause of everything, from which all comes and to which all returns.

The Itihasas and Puranas Are the Fifth Veda
Another reason the Puranas and Itihasas are considered the fifth Veda, distinct from the other four, is that the priests of the four Vedas do not use the Puranas and Itihasas in sacrificial ceremonies, even though these works are studied along with the Vedas.

Vishnu purANa,  considered as the chief authority almost like the Sruti by the followers of viSishTAdvaita philosophy,  was written by Parasara, Vyasa's father.
History for the modern mind is what is available  through archeological research and due to the fashions set by the western traditions, any research of ancient literature  that points to hoary periods several millenia before the common historical era, is looked at with disbelief and therefore not pursued to its logical conclusion.
purANas have the  single objective of talking only about those events and lives of the past which ennoble you and enable  you to a better man. Since history always repeats itself, the purpose of history should  be to learn the lessons of history and do better in the future.
