  la Repubblica of the Arts
In these, Vecchietta's Florentine formation is evident combined with his elegantly linear style and with certain significant novelties where, for example, are to be compared the figures of Adam and Eve which Masolino da Panicale - with whom Vecchietta had collaborated - frescoed in the Brancacci Chapel in symmetry with Masaccio's stupendously dramatic nudes.
In point of fact, unlike the kindly impassiveness of the two progenitors painted by Masolino, those of the Vecchietta are painted genuflecting in the Garden of Eden in the act of thanking the Lord.
Vecchietta painted other works for the hospital and made masterpieces in bronze including, in 1472, the great ciborium which Pandolfo Petrucci, that enlightened tyrant of Siena, had transferred in 1506 to the high altar in the Cathedral.

The Catholic Encyclopedia - Lorenzo di Pietro Vecchietta
A series of frescoes in the Baptistery of S. Giovanni were executed with the assistance of pupils, but much is identified as Vecchietta's own; the Evangelists, the Four Articles of the Creed, the Assumption, containing some lovely angels' heads, and symbolical figures of Virtues.
In the Galleria di belle Arti are a Madonna and some minor works; a St. Martin in the Palazzo Saracini; two panels in the Palazzo Publico, a sermon and miracle of St. Bernardino (sometime attributed to di Giorgio), and a beautiful Our Lady of Pity.
Outside Siena the artist's chief painting, an Assumption, of (1451), is in the church at Pienza; in Florence a Madonna panel and the bronze tomb statute of Marianus Soccinus the Elder (removed from S. Domenico, Siena), a noted Sienese jurisconsult, are in the Uffizi.

In this late work Vecchietta demonstrates his awareness of the humanist currents of the day by the classicizing style of the sarcophagus and the antiquarian details of the Roman soldiers’ armor.
Vecchietta’s career as a painter, referred to in the inscription, is suggested as well through the pictorial complexity of the bronze and its abundance of detail.
Within the shallow recession of the relief he creates a surprising illusion of depth, moving back from the protruding, harshly angular crush of soldiers in the foreground to the low-relief angels swimming peacefully among the clouds.

 Biography
Vecchietta (Lorenzo di Pietro), one of the outstanding Sienese artists of the 15th century, a painter, sculptor, architect, and military engineer.
He was probably trained by Sassetta, but he also came under the influence of Florentine art and his large-scale paintings have a monumentality rare in Siena in the quattrocento.
Another side to Vecchietta's talent is seen in his delightful illuminations in a manuscript of Dante's Divine Comedy (British Library, London, c.1440).

SANTA MARIA DELLA SCALA - SIENA
These paintings were executed before 1440 by Lorenzo Vecchietta and Luciano di Giovanni da Velletri, but were later destroyed because they were deemed obsolete and unsuitable to adequately represent the history of Santa Maria, which in the meantime was acquiring growing prestige and power.
Besides Masolino, Vecchietta’s references for this painting should be traced in the Florentine culture of the early 15th century, particularly in Paolo Uccello and Masaccio.
This is the only scene painted by Vecchietta for the Pellegrinaio cycle, although the painter continued to work for the Hospital’s clients and in particular executed the decoration of the cycle of the Old Sacristy.

Thais - Vecchietta - San Bernardino
Vecchietta surely knew Saint Bernardino; this figure has a harmony between realistic definition and conventional religious formulation that is an obvious attempt to interpret the commemorative portrait in the spirit of Donatello.
But the artist remains at a level of illusory verism, nonetheless contained in a moving simplicity and an intensive synthesis of modeling.
Il Vecchietta conobbe certamente San Bernardino: nell'accordo della definizione realistica con l'impostazione ieratica convenzionale della figura, è evidente il tentativo di dare una interpretazione donatelliana del ritratto celebrativo.

Lorenzo di Piero di Giovanni, known from an early age as Vecchietta, or “little old woman,” was prominent as both painter and sculptor in Siena.
First noted for his sculpture in polychrome wood, he later turned to bronze, influenced by the example of Donatello, who worked in Siena during the 1450s.
Vecchietta also received commissions elsewhere in Tuscany and in Rome, which he visited at least twice.
