Vechta is a district in Lower Saxony, Germany.
It is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the districts of Oldenburg, Diepholz, Osnabrück and Cloppenburg.
The present district was established in 1945 and became a part of the newly founded state of Lower Saxony.

It is bounded by (from the northeast and clockwise) the districts of Verden, Nienburg, Minden-Lübbecke (in North Rhine-Westphalia, Osnabrück, Vechta and Oldenburg, and by the cities of Delmenhorst[?] and Bremen.
The district was established in 1932 by merging the former districts of Diepholz and Sulingen.
The district extends from the southern outskirts of Bremen to the border of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Johan of Dinklage (1258-1290) became the Drosten of the District (county) Vechta; he was in charge of a union of noble men, who were representatives of the Sovereign in the district Vechta.

 Genealogy - Oldenburg Parish Registers - Vechta
As in the whole so called “Oldenburger Münsterland the Catholic church has been the dominating church in the Vechta area.
While the Neuenkirchen parish was an old one reaching back to the Münster period, the other parishes were only founded after the area became a part of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in 1815.
Entries before 1827 can be found in the Catholic Parish Registers of Dinklage, some in the nearby Lutheran parishes of Badbergen and Quakenbrück.

Nearly all of them (covering the time before 1800, for a number of parishes until the 1810s or later) were filmed on microfiches as well and are available for look ups at the Oberkirchenrat Oldenburg, Philosophenweg 8, D - 26121 Oldenburg.
Moreover, there are handwritten copies (so called "Zweitschriften") from 1801 on, accessable at the State Archive Oldenburg, Damm 43, D - 26122 Oldenburg (for the parishes of the church district Jever and for Neuenkirchen such "Zweitschriften" only exist from1825 on).

The hook is taken from the arms of the Counts of Galen, who ruled the area from 1677-1827.
The cross and rose are taken from the arms of the Lords of Dinklage, who acted as vassals for the owners of the castle and fortress in Vechta in the 13th-16th century.
The local castle was built in 1403 by Hugo von Dinklage.
