Vectran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vectran is a manufactured fibre, spun from a liquid crystal polymer created by Celanese Acetate LLC.
They are often used in combination with some polyester as a coating around Vectran core; polyurethane coating can improve abrasion resistance and resistance to ultraviolet radiation and to act as a water barrier.
Vectran has melting point of 330 °C, with progressive strength loss from 220 °C. As it has high resistance to ultraviolet radiation, it can be used outside for long term, if inspected regularly.

Vectran is a polyester-based high performance LCP (liquid crystal polymer) produced by Hoechst Celanese. It is naturally gold in color and has a modulus similar to Kevlar 29, but suffers negligible strength loss with flex. This is a benefit in endurance applications and for cruising sails where durability is key.
VECTRAN: The latest new high modulus yarn on the scene, Vectran is a polyester based liquid crystal fiber manufactured by Hoechst Celanese.
Vectran has a modulus comparable to Kevlar but due to its molecular composition has better flex and abrasion resistance, although its UV properties are worse.

Vectran is tougher to tell when to reline cuz it doesn't show wear like dacron or microline does.
Vectran is not as abrasion resistant as Spectra and will show considerable wear after 200 or so jumps but it is much more resistant to heat and will stay in trim longer.
Vectran lines may need replacing "around" 300 jumps because they are worn, even though they will most likely still be in trim.

Although a Vectran line set with 500 jumps will probably still have trim differentials that are within specifications, the Vectran lines may still need to be replaced due to wear and abrasion.
The life expectancy of Vectran or any other suspension line depends on a number of variables, including environmental factors, packing, etc. We have seen a couple of canopies with Vectran lines that have been used for over 1200 jumps, but look much better than line sets we have seen with only 200 jumps on them.
As with Vectran, the life expectancy of Microline depends on several factors, and there is no specific jump number that dictates when a line set should be replaced.

Continental has pioneered the use of Vectran and spent the past two years working with the material's developer to make it work in bicycle tyres.
Vectran is said to offer "a balance of properties unmatched by other high performance fibres", like Kevlar.
According to Conti, the use of the liquid crystal fibre Vectran means the racing tyres - handmade in Conti's Korbach factory (see feature) - are more puncture-resistant, but also weigh less and offer reduced rolling resistance.
