Vectrex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vectrex is unique in that it utilized vector graphics drawn on a monitor that was integrated in the console; no other console before or after the Vectrex had a comparable configuration, and no other non-portable game console had a monitor of its own (integrated).
However, rather than being driven by a conventional sawtooth deflection system (to generate a raster like a blank TV or monitor has), the Vectrex drove the deflection yoke with a digital-to-analog converter for each of the horizontal and vertical windings on the yoke, allowing dot position to be swept as the software needed.
The Vectrex is synchronized to the rotation of the disk (or vice versa) and draws vectors corresponding to a particular color and/or a particular eye.

VECTREX - pearl among the game consoles
The Vectrex at the same moment showed images for the left and the right eye in turn, so that a threedimensional effect was created.
The Vectrex owed its name to the vector technique that was used in the arcades (for instance in Asteroids and Space War), but until then not yet in game consoles.
Probably the Vectrex particularly appealed to hardcore gamers, who knew the advantages of the vector technique from their experiences in the arcades.

Originally called the Mini Arcade (which is the feeling the Vectrex was trying to capture), a company by the name of General Consumer Electronics (GCE) decided to lease the Vectrex and market it after a name change of course.
The joystick was also designed to fit neatly in to a compartment beneath the Vectrex screen, allowing the Vectrex to remain quite compact when not in use.
There was supposed to be an add-on that would turn the Vectrex in to a full fledged computer, but it never came out.

VECTREX TIMETABLE ----------------- End 1980/Spring 1981: The development of Vectrex starts with an idea from staffers (probably Mike Purvis and John Ross) after brainstorming about how to use cheap CRTs that were found in a small liquidators' surplus store.
Rest of 1984: Vectrex is phased out as Hasbro buys Milton Bradley and video game fever comes crashing down (probable causes: home computer fever, too many mediocre and downright terrible games flooding the market, fallout from the arcade videogame crash of about a year earlier).

Hyperchase is one of the Vectrex's most frustrating disappointments, a beautifully rendered racing game with touchy control that makes it difficult to play and almost impossible to enjoy.

The Vectrex is a pretty typical home game platform, in that it is a miniature computer which performs general purpose game instructions as well as state-of-the-art onscreen graphics processing.
It has a cartridge slot on the side for any number of custom, proprietary game programs to be loaded and played, and it has two little joystick connectors on the front of the unit near the power switch.
The built-in screen is the key to its high graphics fidelity; the way the Vectrex draws its wireframe graphics requires absolute control over the cathode ray tube.

The most interesting accessory for the Vectrex was a 3D Color Imager which a user could wear to see special Vectrex games in "3D color." It didn't work too well, however, and was resigned to novelty status.

Drawings on the Vectrex are then synchronized to the rotation of the disk, with drawings displayed according to a specific color or eye.

There was a color version of the Vectrex itself in the works, and they were doing it pretty uniquely and cost effective as well.
The layers were accessed by adjusting the voltage of the electron gun, and a third color could be generated by setting the voltage in the "in between range" of the two layers.
Of course if the games include the original overlays (for those not familiar, the Vectrex games used overlays for each game that went over the screen and added playfield graphics or game directions - just like many arcade games of the time did), they're worth more as well.

However, this limitation in video game color was reduced via thin (though durable) sheets of colored, clear plastic, which you would place on the slots in front of the monitor, "coloring" the screen appropriately for that game.

If you are unable to adjust your Vectrex, try it out on someone elses, or send a prototype to someone who has adjusted thiers, and have them tape a clear transperancy to thier screen, and then draw on the transperancy where all the graphics are located at.

The color prototype is actually a normal Vectrex with a few modifications (the obvious of course being the CRT itself).
