When Vedek Bareil was unceremoniously killed off back in DS9's third season, mine was certainly one of the strongly disapproving voices; granted, I wasn't one of the groups forming petitions or insisting that history be rewritten, but I certainly felt the move was a mistake.
Bareil's relationship with Kira was interesting, but it was the political and spiritual choices he represented that made the character compelling.
Bareil's unease at the attention he was getting on the Promenade was one, and Kira's slow (and possibly not entirely conscious) attempt to get Bareil to examine a spiritual life was another.

It is somewhat of a surprise that Bareil's character was given any depth in all this mess, but to the credit of Taylor it was there.
Bareil's demons were the whole point of the show; with them rendered pointless, the show was rendered pointless too.
I'm glad in a sense that she slept with Bareil, because it showed she was not demonstrating any feelings of love toward Odo, at least not consciously, through her actions.

This was also one of the first times in a very, very long while that we've had any sort of slow-motion effect used at all, much less to the wonderful ends it was put to here; and seeing that somehow added to the nervousness I was feeling.
I was as hurt as O'Brien was when Neela was revealed as the killer (although as I said, I saw it a bit earlier than he did), and as warmly towards Vedek Bareil as Sisko.
Bareil, unlike Winn, is the absolute best kind of religious leader: he leads and teaches by _example_, or so it appears.
