 Vee-Jay Labels
This label guide covers album labels by Vee Jay Records from the release of the first Vee Jay LP in 1957 until the company declared bankruptcy in 1966.
Vee Jay was revived during the 1970's, and some of the labels from that period are shown where they have been located.
Also in 1979, Vee Jay reissued their Beatles interview album on a nostalgic "rainbow label." These copies, however, have "STEREO" on the cover; 1964 pressings were in mono.

Vee-Jay Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since 2000, U.S. based record label Collectables Records has been remastering and reissuing the Vee-Jay catalog on Audio CD.
The releases were at first unsuccessful, but quickly became big once the British Invasion took off in early 1964, selling 2.6 million Beatles singles in a single month.
Its founders were Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken, a husband-and-wife team that used their initals for the label’s name.

Vee Jay was also a major player in the gospel music field, with luminaries like the Staple Singers, the Original Five Blind Boys, Harmonizing Four, the Caravans, Gospel Harmonettes and the Swan Silvertones in its stable of artists.

The record's ballad side gets raves in the trade press (both pop music and R and B which is rare for the time), and a defining move in the story of the record happens in April when Vee-Jay Records gets a national distribution deal on the strength of initial sales in the Midwest.
Chance Records of Chicago come to the aid of the quintet and Chance #1141 is the label for the Spaniels first effort.
Neither record was much of a success but the Spaniels keep at it on the road in the year 1956.

Beatles Reference Library - Before Capitol
Vee Jay is said to have run out of its regular labels and to have contracted out for others to press their records using whatever labels they would make.
Vee Jay was having success issuing new l.p.'s and singles, so it tried its hand with an e.p., also very successfully.
On Aug. 12, 1964, Vee Jay issued an "old" Beatles album, which was a reissue of Introducing the Beatles.

 The Vee-Jay Story
This time, Vee Jay was ready for national distribution, and pushed the disc to #5 on the R&B charts on their own, although it took about six months for the record to break nationally.
First it was Vee Jay's first album venture into "pop" music, and second, it was their first stereo album.
The people at Chance and Vee Jay were all friends at the time, so you go along and try to help people out, because if they made it, it would mean that you would have some work.

 Vee-Jay Label - Label Histories
The Arkansas-born singer moved to Chicago as a child and recorded with the Delegates for Vee-Jay in 1956.
But Taylor's records didn't sell in the quantities that Reed's did, so he was largely relegated to the role of sideman, although his own recordings made it abundantly clear that this quiet, unassuming guitarist didn't have to play second fiddle to anyone.
James Bracken was a successful record store owner (he and Vivian were partners in a record store from around 1950) and also had a real grip on the current tastes of the record buying public.

 Vee-Jay Label
Rennie had repeatedly offered Capitol and other record companies a Beatles distributorship but none was interested, probably because no British rock band had ever been successful in the U.S. Transglobal Music Company was an intermediary used by EMI, Vee-Jay, and other U.S. record companies to sell their records in foreign countries.
In 1953, Vivian Carter (the "Vee") and her husband, Jimmy Bracken (the "Jay") founded Vee-Jay records in Gary, Indiana.
Between legal injunctions, Vee-Jay released a string of Beatle records, many designed to lure the public into believing it was purchasing brand new Beatle material when in fact, it was not.

 Records on Vee-Jay
The book also catalogues the different variations on Vee Jay records with excellent pictures of the various album covers and record labels also highlighting the counterfeit albums which look very similar to the real thing but are not as valuable.
This clever fake was on the Tollie Label {Tollie was a subsidiary of the Vee-Jay Record Co.} and was the brainchild of two Beatles fans in North Western America who wanted to see if they could fool the experts.
The book is hard back and the presentation is of an extremely high standard with extensive information on WHEN the records were pressed, WHERE the records were pressed, HOW MANY copies were sold, and WHY some records are so much rarer than others.

 First two USA albums article
It was later determined that the royalties owed by Vee-Jay on the Beatles records as of August, 1963, amounted to $859.
Corporate minutes dated January 7, 1964, quote Vee-Jay's Jay Lasker as stating that 30,000 copies of the album could be issued by the end of the week (January 10).
These dates led Beatles historians to conclude incorrectly that the album was released by Vee-Jay in July of 1963.

Vee Jay Ad Back album history
Vee-Jay was not in a financial position to destroy and repress the records without the two songs, so it was decided to sneak the record out in a cover that failed to disclose the inclusion of the songs.
As with all Beatles records on Vee-Jay, there are multiple label variations for this historic album.
In discussing the Beatles situation, Jay Lasker is quoted as follows: "We have an LP that could be huge-we can get it out on the street by the end of this week-at least 30,000 LP's could be gotten out." This indicates that the album was released on or about Friday, January 10, 1964.

Two of the numbers were remakes of earlier recordings: "Jay's Rock" was simply a number he had done for Federal in 1953, originally called "Texas Turkey," and "Big Jay's Hop" was an updated version of "The Deacon's Hop," which gave 1955 listeners an idea as to what all the excitement was about in 1949.
He made his first recording in 1953 for the highly obscure Cool label with "Bob Carter’s Orchestra." After Bo Diddley was signed to Chess in early 1955, Arnold recorded one session in March that remained unreleased until many years later.
On three more she recorded as a solo act--with bands led by Al Smith in 1957 and 1958, and with a band led by Riley Hampton in 1959.

Under his leadership Vee-Jay produced hit records for Dee Clark, Jimmy Reed, Betty Everett, Gene Chandler, El Dorados, and also early hits by The Four Seasons and also introduced America to The Beatles with their first singles in the United States.
But it was learned that there was already a recording company located ihn Texas with that name and so they renamed the new label Abner Records.
Abner soon was part of the operation of Sheridan's record label Chance Records until its demise in 1954.

As a result, in 1963 the first Beatles records were released in America by Vee-Jay, a small Chicago-based label.
Vee-Jay, who has the masters to all the tracks on the Beatles' first LP, wants to take advantage of Beatlemania by releasing an album, but they're not sure if they have the legal rights to use those masters.
For a solution, they turned to the only other British act on their roster: Frank Ifield, an Australian who had achieved moderate success on British pop charts.

The Beatles Before Capitol, Part 4
While Vee Jay and Swan were still producing Beatles records, there was certainly no need for anyone to make "pirate," "counterfeit," or "fantasy" records on those labels.
Since the Beatles were complete unknowns in the USA in early 1963, Vee Jay Records never issued a picture sleeve for their first release.
Every one of the Vee Jay reissues on their Oldies label was counterfeited, beginning in the early 1970's.
