Vehicle for hire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A vehicle for hire is a vehicle providing public transportation, which transports one or more passengers between locations of the passengers' choice.
Vehicles for hire can be distinguished from other modes of public transportation in that vehicle for hire passengers are more or less free to choose their starting and ending locations (point of origin and destination), whereas in other modes, the passenger must choose from a limited selection of locations designated by the service provider.
The most common vehicle for hire around the world is the taxicab; other vehicles for hire include limousines, rickshaws, auto rickshaws, velotaxis (pedicabs), horse-drawn carriages (including hackney carriages and caleches), and water taxis.

The number of vehicles does not translate directly into the number of trips provided to residents in the area, or other indicators of the exact size of the industry, for several reasons: (1) Many vehicles provide service outside the Community Board district in which their base is located.
Vehicle seizure: Because of the high default rate on summonses, in November 1989 the City Council gave TLC authority to seize vehicles found to be operating for-hire without a license.
