 Millennium bug lives in Australia
The goal here was to identify the various species of small water striders so we know exactly what they can tell us about the health of our streams and waterbodies.
ugs from the Veliidae family are often found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world and occur on many oceanic islands.
The largest families are the Gerridae (35 species) and Veliidae (66 species).

Life Histories of Waterstriders of the Sangamon River, Champaign County, Illinois
Species in the genus Rheumatobates (Gerridae) and the waterstrider Metrobates hesperius (Gerridae) are the primary focus, but I am also collecting other species including the riffle bug Rhagovelia oriander (Veliidae) and, in the early spring, the genera Gerris and Aquarius (Gerridae).
Along the shoreline, the exposed roots of trees shelter large populations of Rheumatobates and younger instars of Metrobates, as well as a few Microvelia american (Veliidae).
Where current is swift, such snags sometimes have eddys on the downstream side of partially submerged branches (see arrow).

Adults are 3/16 to 3/4 inch (3 to 20 mm) long but the long legs make them appear much larger.
The shortlegged striders (Hemiptera: Veliidae), and water treaders (Hemiptera: Mesoveliidae) are generally smaller but share similar habitats.
Broad-shouldered water striders or riffle bugs (Hemiptera: Veliidae) are similar to water striders but are smaller (less than 1/4 inch long), usually wingless, and brown or fl in color with silvery markings.

 CSIRO PUBLISHING - Invertebrate Systematics
A phylogenetic analysis using maximum parsimony was performed on a dataset comprising 56 morphological characters scored for 24 exemplar genera covering all families and subfamilies of Gerromorpha.
The phylogenetic relationships found concur with those presented by Andersen (1982) except that the relationships between some subfamilies of Veliidae and Gerridae are unresolved.
Previously, we have covered all Australian species of the families Gerridae, Hermatobatidae and Veliidae.

Adult marine water striders are wingless but may disperse along coasts, chains of islands and possibly across wider stretches of open sea.
Although some species of coral bugs, Halovelia (Veliidae) and Halobates are widespread, most species of marine water striders have rather restricted distributions.
Based upon distributional data for about 110 species, a number of areas of endemism can be delimited within the Indo-Pacific region.

My principal interests are the systematics, comparative morphology, biology and biogeography of the Heteroptera emphasizing the aquatic and semiaquatic families; especially the Nearctic and Neotropical Veliidae, Mesoveliidae and Gerridae.
In addition I am responsible for identifications of insects sent to the Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, accessioning the 10-15,000 specimens added to the Collection each year, processing incoming and outgoing loans, leading tours of the facilities, hosting visiting scientists, and attending to the routine curatorial needs of the Collection.

The common species have an elongate abdomen; some species with the abdomen very short.
Species in the family Gerridae are distinguished from water-striding Veliidae by noting that the middle legs of the latter arise about midway between the front and hind legs.
Some veliids are known as broad-shouldered water striders owing to the abdomen tapering posteriorly from the relatively wide mesothorax.

Gordon's Water Striders and Pond Skaters Page
There are about 1 500 species world wide and though most of them live on fresh water about 10% are marine living on the coast or even the open sea and some are even terrestrial.
Pond Skaters and their allies have been around for at least 55 million years because we have found fossil Gerridae and Hydrometridae dating back to the Upper Paleocene and fossil Veliidae and Mesoveliidae from the lower cretaceous.
Scientists believe they probably evolved in the early Mesozoic.
