Marcus Velleius Paterculus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The repetitions, redundancies, and slovenliness of expression may be partly due to the haste with which (as the author frequently states) it was written.
The inflated rhetoric, the straining after effect by means of hyperbole, antithesis and epigram, belong firmly to the Silver Age, of which Paterculus is the earliest example.
He purposed to write a fuller history of the later period, including the civil war between Caesar and Pompey and the wars of Tiberius; but there is no evidence that he did so.

 Velleius Paterculus
Velleius Paterculus' Roman history -in fact a brief compendium and not a full-scale study of the past- is the most important source for the story of his life and family.
Paterculus' grandfather Caius Velleius had been prefect of the military engineers (praefectus fabrum) in the army of Marcus Brutus, the man who had killed Julius Caesar in 44 BCE and tried to restore the Roman republic.
When Velleius Paterculus, the subject of this article, was born in c.20 BCE, the Germanic wars were about to begin, and it is likely that the future historian spent his youth in one of the military settlements along the Rhine.

Some blemishes of style, particularly the clumsy and involved structure of his sentences, may perhaps be ascribed to insufficient literary training.
The inflated rhetoric, the strain~ ing after effect by means of hyperbole, antithesis and epigram, mark the degenerate taste of the Silver Age, of which Paterculus is the earliest example.
He purposed to write a fuller history of the later period, which should include the civil war between Caesar and Pompey and the wars of Tiberius; but there is no evidence that he carried out this intention.

 Velleius Paterculus
In those days, Paterculus' now deservedly famous description of the conflict between the Romans and the Germanic tribes, which culminates in his account of the battle in the Teutoburg Forest, seemed remarkably relevant to the conflict between the German reformer Marten Luther and the Roman Catholic church.
Paterculus is also indebted to the Roman historian Sallustius (86-34), who stated that the fall of Carthage in 146 had been the most important turning point in the history of Rome.
Paterculus reflects upon the human condition, gives a balanced and not uncritical portrait of a man he has known, and changes in a few lines from what amounts to comedy to sad tragedy.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 97.9.19
Velleius is not an historian in the tradition of Thucydides or Polybius, but his history is one of the most important documents attesting to the ideology of the Augustan and Tiberian ages, a critical source of information for Augustan self-presentation, and the shape of the Roman mentalité.
Velleius was one of the victors of the Roman Revolution.
Velleius' et hoc sane numium fuit clearly reflects something of the ideology of the Augustan age, where the example of the headgear of Caesar was avoided, and an elaborate fantasy was concocted to justify Augustus' choice of a crown for himself.

Velleius Paterculus, who lived in the reigns of Augustus and Tiberius (30 BC–AD 37), served as a military tribune in Thrace, Macedonia, Greece and Asia Minor, and later, from AD 4 to 12 or 13, as a cavalry officer and legatus in Germany and Pannonia.
It is a unique document giving short details of his public offices and honours; his benefactions to the empire, to the people, and to the soldiers; and his services as a soldier and as an administrator.

The "universal history" of Velleius Paterculus falls within the great lacuna of Roman history between Livy and Tacitus and includes material contemporary to the writer.
The introduction ends with an interesting proposal that is a bit misguided: Velleius' oft deprecated "mediocrity" may work to the cultural historian's advantage by providing a representation of the zeitgeist of the author's milieu.
This is certainly misleading for Velleius doubtless intended an erudite and virtuoso performance.

The first volume of Professor Woodman's edition of, and commentary on, Velleius Paterculus was published in the Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries series in 1977.
This is the second volume to appear, covering Velleius' narrative of Julius Caesar and Augustus, down to 19 B.C. Velleius' history was first published in A. 30 and is being increasingly regarded as an important source for Roman history.
Professor Woodman's aims have been the same as in his first volume: to establish the text, or at least to indicate where it is unreliable, and to explain the nature and meaning of the narrative.

Paterculus: The Tiberian Narrative - Cambridge University Press   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
This volume deals with the most controversial part of Velleius’ work, regarded by the majority of modern scholars as a panegyrical biography of Tiberius and used as an excuse for dismissing the historical value of Velleius’ whole work.
In the introduction Dr Woodman considers the nature of the Tiberian narrative in the light of the literary tradition, and argues that it is no more panegyrical than some of the most admired products of Roman historiography such as Livy and Ammianus.
He also considers the transmission of Velleius’ text since its discovery in 1515, and argues that, contrary to the opinion of most nineteenth and twentieth-century editors, Rhenanus’ editio princeps of 1520 is a more reliable authority than Amerbach’s apograph of 1516.
