Velocipedes allowed them to cover the miles rapidly while keeping them close to the track to better examine its joints and the underlying gravel bed.
Unlike the more common hand car which sped across the tracks through hand pumping, the velocipede was made to move through a combination of pushing and pulling its handles forward and backward while also pedaling in the manner of a bicycle.
This particular velocipede was donated to the Kansas Museum of History by Charles Goebel, an avid railroad collector and one-time employee of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Velocipede - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The velocipede was the predecessor of the bicycle, introduced in the Victorian age.
Later 2 wheel velocipedes had increasingly large front wheels, directly driven by bicycle pedals, and a smaller back wheel - these leading to the penny farthing.
Invented in the 1800s in France, the velocipede was sometimes called the boneshaker.

 Velocipede
Velocipede was a solid north country runner who won two cups and several other good races, despite a leg injury which often troubled him and eventually led to his retirement from the turf.
Another Velocipede daughter who did well on the turf was CAROLINA (1836, from Nanette by Partisan), who ran second to Deception in the 1839 Oaks; she did not produce anything in the stud.
Other good producing Velocipede daughters included ROCBANA (1831) and HER MAJESTY(1832), from the Walton daughter, Miss Garforth; Dido, Meteor's dam, was also a daughter of Miss Garforth, all of them bred by Armitage at Ainderby.

Willard Sawyer, velocipede manufacturer, is a figure of national importance in the history of cycling and has been called 'the first truly professional maker of man-powered vehicles'.
Sawyer's early machines were as impractical vehicles as other velocipedes, still then largely experimental and usually made as one-offs or to order as a side-line of flsmiths, iron-founders, carriage builders, and carpenters.
The virtues of the Sawyer velocipede were extolled by many, including J.C. Skeffington who rode his machine home from Dover to Brighton in 1858 and then toured southern England, covering 526 miles in 20 days.
