  Velotype - Wikinfo
Velotype is the trademark for a type of keyboard for typing text, known as a syllabic chord keyboard.
Contrary to traditional QWERTY type keyboards, on which a typist usually presses one key at a time to create one character at a time, a Velotype requires the user to press several keys simultaneously, producing syllables rather than letters.
Velotypes are often used for live applications, such as live subtitling for the hearing impaired.

Prospects for enhanced captioning services for the hearing impaired
The focus is on the critical factors to be addressed in the research and development as there are the training of the velotypists, aspects of the role of the captioning service in communication of the hearing impaired, and an adapted text telephone suitable to use the relay service with Velotype text input speed.
The Velotype keyboard is completely different from the Dvorak- and Qwerty keyboards, and the typist has to be trained to obtain a sufficient speed with which speech spoken with "normal" speed can be followed.
At the moment a first estimation about future usage of the velotype relay system is made via the interviews with the relay service users.

Although a TV programme may be described as ’live’, in fact much of the programme may contain segments of video that can be pre-prepared.
The portions of the programming that are truly live are typed on the fly using Steno, Velotype or when speed is not as crucial QWERTY keyboards (please ask for details on the availability of input methods).
Live Steno - subtitles may be input on the fly from a specialist input device such a Steno or Velotype (please ask for details) keypad or a standard QUERTY keyboard.

Velotype captions are created using a syllabic "chord" keyboard, permitting a typing speed of only about 100 words per minute.
By nature, programs subtitled using Velotype technology usually have subtitles which have been heavily edited or summarized.
Other countries are now beginning to use stenographic real-time subtitling: in the United Kingdom, the BBC now uses stenographic technology for real-time subtitling, and in the Netherlands, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation is beginning to use stenography for their live broadcasts.

The next keyboard is something called a Velotype keyboard and this is a keyboard where you type in according to syllables, so, for instance the word ‘inferno’ has three syllables, ‘in’, ‘fer’ and ‘no’ and that would be three strokes instead of seven on a QWERTY keyboard.
This is less stressful to the keyboard operator than fighting through the traditional keyboard but requires a great deal of training.
One year of training and practice is needed to reach speeds of 80 to 90 words per minute, so really it takes two people on a Velotype even to get up to 120 words per minute.

This application will provide the hearing impaired with an option to read captions for live broadcast programs, i.e., when off-line captioning is not feasible.
The main advantage in using a speech recognizer rather than a stenography-based system (e.g., Velotype) is the relaxed requirements for operator training.
Also, the amount of text generated by a system based on stenography tends to be large, thus making it harder to read.
