Velupillai Prabhakaran - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Velupillai Prabhakaran (sometimes spelled Velupillai Pirapaharan) (born November 26, 1954) is the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), an independence movement and a rebel militia fighting for Tamil self-rule in North-East Sri Lanka, banned as a terrorist organization in several countries including USA, Britain, India, Australia and Malaysia.
In 1975, after becoming heavily involved in the Tamil protest movement, he was accused of assassinating the mayor of Jaffna.
On May 5, 1976, the TNT was renamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), commonly known as the Tamil Tigers.

The very fact that VP or Velupillai Prabakharan was meeting with a foreign delegation was in itself of significance as it illustrated the level of importance attributed to the Norwegian initiative for peace.
Prabakharan's discussion with the Norwegians was positively refreshing in the sense that he neither ruled out peace talks nor imposed preconditions for resumption of talks.
Prabakharan also expressed misgivings about her ability to deliver politically because of the increasing militarisation of society and the ascendancy of Sinhala Buddhist chauvinism.

Tamil Tigers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Founded in 1976, it is one of the many such organisations that seek to establish an independent state for Lankan Tamils, to be called Tamil Eelam, in the north-east of Sri Lanka.
The leader of the organization is Velupillai Prabakharan.
The LTTE has infamously absorbed or eliminated most of the people from the other organisations over the twenty year independence struggle, and has generally pursued an all-out approach to war, including terrorist activities (at home and abroad) and suicide bombings as well as successful conventional engagements.

The mandate received by the UNP led front and the impressive victories of Wickremesinghe and Jayewardene have demonstrated that substantial portions of the southern voters have dismissed Kumaratunga’s accusations with the contempt it deserved.
It is important to recognise that Velupillai Prabakharan and his companions are firmly convinced that the Tamil national question cannot be resolved within a united Sri Lanka.

While the Norwegians last week met LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran to explore the possibility of resuming negotiations with President Chandrika Kumaratunga's government, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake was locking horns with the National Unity Alliance, calling for the military decimation of the LTTE.
The internal policy conflict within the government on not just dealing with the LTTE but on the minorities as a whole, was evident in the day to day functioning or rather the non functioning of government with the president struggling for three weeks to even swear in the deputy ministers.
It is such deception practised by the Kumaratunga administration at the very outset that will queer the pitch for genuine negotiations with the LTTE, thereby giving the Tigers an opportunity of accusing Kumaratunga of a lack of sincerity from the outset, if the talks do fail.
