Spiders reproduce by eggs laid in silk bundles called egg sacs, and the male (usually significantly smaller than the female down to 1% for Tidarren sisyphoides) is likely to be killed by the female after the coupling, or sometimes before intercourse has occurred.

Velvet Worms are soft-bodied worm-like animals, but unlike worms, they have paired legs along the length of the body and a pair of antennae on the head.
They are carnivorous, ensnaring their prey with sticky slime squirted from pores on either side of the head, then biting pieces off the beetle, cricket, spider, wood louse or cockroach.

I suspect that you may have a form of the fl widow, possibly Latrodectus variolus (the Northern Black Widow), which usually has a row of red or orange dots down its back (dorsal abdomen), which might be fused in some specimens.
The picture you saw on the Dutch book appears to be Latrodectus hasselti (the Australian Red Back Spider), which, as far as I know, has not been imported to the United States (although it was fairly recently accidentally imported into Japan.) References: Kaston, B. How to Know the Spiders, 3rd ed.
