QRxPharma in hunt for drugs in reptiles' venom - The Boston Globe
Gary Pace, an Aussie by birth, sounds a bit like the Crocodile Hunter, and his company's Waltham conference room feels a bit like the Outback, when he explains that his native land is home to 17 of the 20 most dangerous snakes in the world.
By studying the composition of the venoms, Pace hopes his company will be able to understand what makes them so powerful.
One researcher there, Paul Masci, first got interested in the therapeutic properties of snake venom when a friend was bitten by an Australian brown snake while he was cleaning its cage.

Is Rattlesnake Venom Evolving? Natural History - Find Articles
The snake's venom glands; located at the rear of the upper jaw and connected by ducts to its pair of hollow fangs, produce a complex brew of toxic peptides, polypeptides, and enzymes.
In the venom, these toxins are combined in differing proportions that vary throughout a species' range and even during an individual snake's lifetime.
Neurotoxic venom, on the other hand, doesn't allow for such leisure, because it blocks nerve impulses to muscles, including those in the diaphragm that are used in breathing.

Treatment of toad venom poisoning with digoxin-specific fab fragments CHEST - Find Articles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Toxicity from toad venom poisoning is similar to digoxin toxicity and carries a high mortality rate.
The cardioactive compounds in toad venom are bufadienolides[1] and therefore differ from digoxin, and most other plant-derived cardiac glycosides, which are cardenolides.
Also, unlike the cardiac glycosides found in plants, the cardioactive compounds in toad venom are known as aglycones or cardiac genies because they do not have attached sugars.[10] To simplify this terminology, we will use the term cardioactive steroids to refer to both the cardiac glycosides and the cardiac genies.

Venom - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution movie review | AccessAtlanta
In the devastating wake of Hurricane Katrina, one thing you might not expect to find at the megaplex is a brand-new film shot in Louisiana and sporting a horde of dead bodies.
But here it is. The horror film "Venom" opens today full of rural Louisiana voodoo, a back-from-the-dead killer, mindless bloodletting, exposed guts, teen victims stacked so high you can't even see over them and, oh yeah, snakes.
Before it was finally called "Venom," this low-budget thriller teeming with no-name actors went by other titles like "Backwater" and "The Reaper." It was filmed last year (mostly in and around tiny Choctaw near Baton Rouge and New Orleans).

Which Came First, the Snake or the Venom?. The Loom: A blog about life, past and future

This conclusion arose from the fact that some lizards produce the same sorts of venom as snakes--including this desert spotted monitor that Fry is posing next to on one of his venom expeditions in the Outback.
