  Hydrothermal Vents
A hydrothermal vent is a geyser on the seafloor.
Although most of the deep sea is sparsely populated, vent sites teem with a fascinating array of life.
As the vent water bursts out into the ocean, its temperature may be as high as 400°C (750°F).

 Vent & Filters
Vent Plugs with Filter can be used to relieve pressure or vacuum on bearing housings, gear boxes, reservoirs, or any application where venting is necessary.
Vent Plugs with Filter and Check Valve is similar to the A-3432 series, however, it has a check valve which is designed to allow air to pass through it in one direction only.
Vent Plugs with Filter and Deflectors can be used to relieve pressure or vacuum on bearing housings, gear boxes, reservoirs, or any application where venting is necessary.

 USGS Photo Glossary: Volcanic vent
Small lava fountain erupts from a new vent on the flank of Pu`u `O`o spatter and cinder cone on the east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i.
Vents are openings in the Earth's crust from which molten rock and volcanic gases escape onto the ground or into the atmosphere.
Vents may consist of a single circular-shaped structure, a large elongate fissure and fracture, or a tiny ground crack.

Vent species rely not on photons from the sun but on chemicals from the Earth's interior.
While vent microbes thrive on the stuff, this gas is lethal to most other organisms, including the creatures that live within wafting distance.
Biologists have seen "naked" snails around hydrothermal vents that could not form their calcium carbonate shells because the water was too acidic.

 TA Speaker Topics: Vent FAQ's
If the vent is more than about a 1/4 wavelength then the frequency response in the bass range will become dependent on how the listener is positioned with respect to the driver and vent.
As long as the vent is within about 1/4 wavelength of the driver it doesn't really matter which face of the cabinet it is on in order for the vent output to sum correctly with the driver output.
For vented type speakers operated at full power that is, full excursion, it is possible to end up with audible noise from the air rushing in and out of the vent.

Vents have been found at just about every type of sea floor spreading boundary (slow, intermediate, fast); they have been found at "hot spots"; and they have been found in back-arc basins.
Water in these vents becomes superheated (because of the intense pressure) often reaching temperatures of 350 degrees C. As it streams to the surface and mixes with the cold bottom water (at a temperature of 2 degrees C), the vent water quickly cools and dumps its load of minerals.
Whereas symbiosis is the norm for the Pacific tubeworms and bivalves, the Atlantic vent shrimp appear to scrape bacteria from the debris surrounding a vent.

 Vent Crab
The vent crab is typically found among dense clusters of tubeworms at an average depth of 1.7 miles and can tolerate a temperature gradient that ranges from 77°F in the tubeworm clumps, to 36°F, which is the temperature of the water surrounding the vent sites.
Because the vent crab is found at an average depth of about 2.7 kilometers (1.7 mi), it experiences about 250 times the atmospheric pressure that we do.
While scientists have found that young vent crabs can live for months in the lab at atmospheric pressure, the adult crabs must be kept under high-pressure conditions similar to those back home or they will die.

Eruptions of Mount Spurr Volcano, Alaska, Photographs of the 1992 Eruptions
Photography of the 1992 eruptions of the Crater Peak vent at Spurr volcano illustrates a number of phenomenon related to explosive volcanism and associated volcanic hazards.
Crater Peak is a satellitic vent perched in the southern breach of the volcano's caldera which formed 10,000 - 20,000 years ago, truncating an ancestral stratovolcano.
A satellitic vent is a vent that forms on the side of a volcano; a secondary vent.

 Hydrothermal Vent Communities
Students will learn where vents are likely to form, how they form, and how physical conditions contribute to the development of a living vent community and to its eventual demise.
In their most advanced stages vents are home to mussels, a variety of worms, anemones, and a large population of crabs, as well as many of the earlier colonists.
Vents are most often found along the mid-ocean ridge and rift system that extends through the oceans at sea floor spreading centers.

Habitats: Hydrothermal Vent - Hydrothermal Vent Life
Although hydrothermal vents are what we would consider a harsh environment, they are teeming (abundent) with life.
As long as the vents remain active, which is usually one to two years, animals thrive there.
In fact, more than 300 species live around the vents and are unique to this type of environment.

 Hot Vents
As the sulfide is released from the vent, bacterial populations grow and provide a food source for animals such as bivalve mollusks.
In the vicinity of the vents, where sulfide-rich water is spewed out, bacteria that derive energy from the oxidation of sulfide live as mats on rocky surfaces and on the surface of soft sediments.
Initially, all that was present were a few mobile animals and large clouds of sulfur bacteria, but large numbers of animals colonized later and grew very rapidly, which is a great contrast with growth rates of animals on the typically trophically depauperate deep sea.

The scientists surmised that the light came from the intense heat of the vent water.
The animals need to get close enough to the vents to feed on chemosynthetic bacteria, which derive nourishment from the energy-rich sulfur compounds in the water, but they run the risk of getting cooked in the hydrothermal fluids if they get too near.
Given that scientists only discovered deep-sea hydrothermal vents and thermophilic microbes in the last 20 years, an understanding of their significance is likely to evolve rapidly as researchers probe deeper into the extreme environments.

Review: Kool Solutions Chill Vent 1
The "Deluxe" version of the Chill Vent 1 comes with an unremarkable 80mm sleeve bearing fan with about a two watt rating; this is the only difference between it and the "Standard" version of the Vent.
Many of them have vents on the side panel that the Chill Vent's shovel end faces, but those vents may be low on the panel, or high, or in the middle.
The Chill Vent has more engineering in it than the average quick plastic duct-thing, though, and it is what it says on the label an easy-to-install cooling upgrade that doesn't cost a fortune and doesn't give you much opportunity to destroy your computer.

Exploring the deep ocean floor [This Dynamic Earth, USGS]
Since the early 1970s, scientists had predicted that hot springs (geothermal vents) should be found at the active spreading centers along the mid-oceanic ridges, where magma, at temperatures over 1,000 °C, presumably was being erupted to form new oceanic crust.
View of the first high-temperature vent (380 °C) ever seen by scientists during a dive of the deep-sea submersible Alvin on the East Pacific Rise (latitude 21° north) in 1979.
In the late 1980s, scientists documented the existence of a dim glow at some of the hot geothermal vents, which are the targets of current intensive research.
