The most famous Venus figurine is the "Venus of Willendorf." The Willendorf was found in an area of Willendorf, Austria, and continues to be the standard for descriptions of this specific type of figurine.
After studying 188, Venus figurines Rice found that the figurines were quite varied in shape and size, and that their ages could possibly be ascertained by the number of lines on their faces.
Perhaps it was a systematic trading of the figurines to other cultures which occurred, where specific groups took the icons and crafted them to represent fertility figurines of their own group, or perhaps it was a universal image which only with the advent of sculpture was incorporated into the lives of the Paleolithic peoples.

Mi Hummel Figurines -- Recommendations and Resources   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The earliest figurines were made of stone; more recent creations are also made of ceramic, metal, wood, plastic, etc. The earliest figurines are often of pregnant female women, and are called Venus figurines, in reference to their presumed representation of a female goddess, or in any case some connection to fertility.
This signifies that the figurines were used to create ritual scenes because the construction of the positions of the figurines was also of the most common burial position or they could have served as a ritual to bring about prosperity.
The figurines that were dropped in graves were always nude and had the Olmec features of slanting eyes and frowning mouths, but they also had special hair designed from clay strips that were added to the figurines.

 'Venus' Figurines in Prehistoric Europe
By looking at occurrences of ‘Venus’ figurines, the wider climatic and cultural context and the various interpretations that have been proposed by archaeologists it is possible to gain insight into aspects of this phenomenon and gain an insight into European prehistory.
Although there are reported dates for ‘Venus’ figurines ranging from 29,000-14,000 years B.P, by far the majority of the ‘Venus’ figurines appear between 23,000 and 25,000 B.P (Gamble, 1981:97, cited in Dickson, 1990), at a period that is referred to in Eastern Europe as the ‘Gravettian’ and in Western Europe as the ‘Perigordian’.
Whether ‘Venus’ figurines were ‘mother Goddess’ statues of religious or cultic significance, or whether they represented the role of women in society or a flowering of artistic ability due to increased cognitive development is somewhat of a moot point.

Clothing of figurines may be record of Ice Age tribes' skills
These odd and mysterious figurines suggest that people living 26,000 years ago possessed well-developed weaving skills that were at least as valuable to the community as the strength and prowess of male hunters.
The figurines generally aren't very realistic -- the pear-shaped, disproportioned Venus of Willendorf likely had as much resemblance to women of the Paleolithic as she does to contemporary women.
Perhaps the makers are commenting on the importance of textiles in their lives, or use the woven objects to identify people who are weavers, or the woven objects could simply be ceremonial clothing that denotes an individual's status.

In a new analysis of the renowned "Venus" figurines, the hand-size statuettes of female bodies carved from 27,000 to 20,000 years ago, the researchers have found evidence that the women of the so-called upper Paleolithic era were far more accomplished, economically powerful and sartorially gifted than previously believed.
On the Venus of Lespugue, an approximately 25,000-year-old figurine from southwestern France, the anthropologists noticed a "remarkable" degree of detail lavished on the rendering of a string skirt, with the tightness and angle of each individual twist of the fibers carefully delineated.
By their estimate, the detailing of the stitches shown on some of the Venus figurines was intended to flaunt the value and beauty of the original spinsters' skills.
