  TURAN - VEPSES
An inquiry which was conducted by ethnologists in 1983 showed that there were up to 13,000 Vepses on the territory of the former Soviet Union, of whom 5,600 lived in Karelia, approximately 4,000 in the Leningrad Province and less than 1,000 in the Vologda Province.
The Vepses are closely related to the Karelians, culturally, linguistically and religiously.
In the 20th c., the Vepses have called themselves the Lyudinikad or even Tyagalazhet, only the southern Vepses have used the ancient name Vepses which is now coming back in connection with various measures taken to preserve the national culture.

 VEPSES
The census figures of 1970 and 1979 are not objective, but reflect the arbitrariness and discretionary opinions of the officials in registering the nationality.
Most of the Vepses in the Leningrad and Vologda provinces who speak their native language are over 40 years of age.
A hopeful sign is perhaps the re-establishment of a national district around Lake Onega in Karelia and the introduction of the Vepsian language instruction at schools.

All these peoples, except the Permyak Komis, are also minorities in the administrative unit that bears the name of the people, or do not have one altogether (e.g.
Ingrian Finns in the Leningrad Province), or they are divided among different administrative units (Vepses, Selkups, Nenets; indeed, the Saamis are divided among different countries).
At the same time, it is characteristic of many of these nations to live dispersed, so that a notable percentage of them, sometimes even the majority (of Mordvins, Maris) of the nation live outside their national administrative unit.

 Merya
The Meryas (also Merä) were an ancient tribe who lived in the region of modern Russian cities of Moscow, Rostov, Kostroma, Jaroslavl and Vladimir.
They probably spoke a Finnic language related to the languages spoken by other tribes in the surrounding larger region, such as the Mari, the Mordvins, the Meshchera and the Vepses who were their neighbours.
They were an old and important culture which is shown in the numerous archaeological finds in those areas.
