Mike Leigh's Vera Drake. - By David Edelstein - Slate Magazine
Leigh is obviously aware that, whatever you think of a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy, the procedure is a brutal one, likely to leave physical and emotional scars.
Leigh's method of working with actors—allowing them to research their own parts for months and improvise much of their dialogue before a script is hammered together—produces amazing bits of business, dialogues breathtaking in their intimacy (these actors are immersed), and also a lot of dead ends.
Leigh has devised a subplot—really, a counter-plot—in which the daughter (Sally Hawkins) of the well-to-do family for whom Vera cleans is date-raped.

 Film Comment
Vera manages to do a great deal for others by refusing to imagine situations that might be too much for her to cope with.
Leigh depicts the procedures in exacting detail, but also with great discretion, as though Chardin had painted the implements Vera uses-a syringe, rubber tubing, a grater, a bar of soap, and a basin of water-arranged on a bed, in a still life.
About halfway through the film, Vera is arrested and the rest of the narrative deals with the reactions of family, friends, the police, and the courts to the news that a woman regarded as the soul of goodness is a criminal.

Leigh: I do what I do, which is to collaborate with the actor by the various esoteric means at our disposal (that I don't talk about) to bring this woman to existence.
Leigh: If the question is if I hadn't made "Topsy Turvy," is it the case that I wouldn't have made "Vera Drake," that isn't relevant.
Leigh: My natural inclination is to deal with these things in a subtler way; this arises from the actual issue and what I feel about it.

'Vera Drake' focuses on character, not politics
The second hour of the movie is taken up with what happens when one of Vera's young patients nearly dies, the police come and arrest her, and she and those around her (all of whom emotionally depend on her) have to deal with the tragic consequences.
Leigh balances his abortion theme with subplots involving an unwanted pregnancy from a date rape and a much-wanted pregnancy in Vera's sister-in-law, but he doesn't express a strong opinion on the subject.
For instance, the sequence in which Vera is taken to the local precinct and interrogated by a group of extraordinarily polite police goes against all the cop-movie clichés and is utterly mesmerizing in its sense of absolute veracity.
