It was a back-and-forth thriller of a junior baseball tournament, the final series of which went to Veraguas, who had to play six games to get to a last game that went 12 innings before a run scored on a wild pitch let them go home with the trophy.
This was the first time in 37 such tournaments that Veraguas won the championship, and this with a team that has played together since Little League and put in some outstanding international performances.
The only other time a Veraguas team made it to the finals was 11 years ago.

The province of Veraguas is about four hours west of the nation’s capital, Panama City.
When Christopher Columbus sailed off the coast of Panama, he was so impressed with the vegetation that he called the area Veraguas, meaning “green waters.” Veraguas is the only province in Panama that has shores on both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

In Veraguas we only made a short stop in Santiago to get some things to eat and drink.
The road in Veraguas on PAN-1 starts good, then it promises to get better because they are still expanding PAN-1 there to two lanes in each direction (already some 70% of PAN-1 has been made a true highway).
Of course, although Veraguas isn't a terribly exciting province (IMHO), there are places to visit like Atalaya and Santa Fe as well as popular surf spots and ecotourism in Coiba Island.

On 15 June, 2006, the first publication to assemble terrestrial biodiversity information from Bahia Honda, Panama, was presented by Santiago Castroviejo and Alicia Ibaez, editors, at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama City.
"Whereas the Province of Veraguas is well-known to historians as the only piece of the New World awarded to Colombus' decendents--the "Dukes of Veraguas"-- by scientific standards it is still terra ignota," remarked Stanley Heckadon-Moreno, STRI anthropologist, at the book presentation.
Remnant islands generated by the Galapagos hotspot that later migrated East and the subsequent volcanic and emergent terrains that formed the Isthmus of Panama form the steep and deeply faulted lands of southern Veraguas.
