The Verdon canyon was a real "natural" for primitive man, proven partially by the hundreds of 400,000-year-old artifacts unearthed in the Grotte de la Baume Bonne at the village of Quinson (in the Gorges du Verdon, a few km west of Lac de Ste Croix).

The Verdon, on the southern border of the Alpes de Haute-Provence, is a magical river.
Several million years ago, this river scoured its way through several hundred metres of limestone to form the famous gorges, carrying along vast quantities of alluviums, which as they were deposited gradually formed the vast Valensole plateau to the west.
The river flows from the alpine foothills of Sain- André-les-Alpes to the Provençal valley of Gréoux-les-Bains.

The river is dam controlled so another important matter to resolve was the flow of water - we did not want to find ourselves halfway down the canyon just as the tap at the dam was turned off completely (or the opposite).
