  Verhulst biography
On 28 September 1835 Verhulst was appointed professor of mathematics at the Université Libre of Brussels.
Verhulst's research on the law of population growth is important.
Verhulst showed in 1846 that forces which tend to prevent a population growth grow in proportion to the ratio of the excess population to the total population.

The Nature Institute - The Form of Evolution
So the assessment of Verhulst's thesis—a thesis he presents through a vast array of morphological data—requires only that one observe the relevant forms and note their relationships.
Either the relations Verhulst claims to recognize between forms (including the human form) are there to be seen, or they are not.
If they are, the implications may be profound—and Verhulst's take on the implications may not be accepted by all readers—but this is no more a reason to reject what one can see with one's own eyes than the profound implications of Galileo's observations were a reason to reject sunspots and the moons of Jupiter.

 The Carolingian Economy
To Verhulst, the prime mover of Carolingian economic expansion was the manor.
Verhulst demonstrates the extent to which the Carolingian empire formed a commonwealth by calling attention to similarities in regional patterns of exchange (monetarization, urbanization, synchronized booms and busts across Carolingian Europe).
Diverging somewhat from the archaeologist Richard Hodges's interpretation, Verhulst sees in emporia's ephemeral nature (a result of being bound to Carolingian political power) the salient characteristic of these large commercial centers on the fringes of the Carolingian empire.

 Boom and Bust Mathematics
The founder of population mathematics was Pierre Verhulst (1804-1849), a very talented Belgian mathematician dogged by poor health throughout his short life.
But Verhulst understood that real populations are capped: in every habitat and for every species there is a carrying capacity.
Verhulst added to this model a new negative term which has the effect of removing excess population when the population grows beyond the carrying capacity M. The Verhulst term is the product of gp(n) -- the number of new animals -- and p(n)/M -- the population expressed as a fraction of the carrying capacity.

Math 145: Verhulst Population Growth Model   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
This model of population growth was first proposed by the Belgian mathematician Pierre F. Verhulst in 1845.
For small values of g the Verhulst model tends to predict populations approaching a stable number (like the logistic model).
For somewhat larger values of g it predicts fluctuating populations, and for still larger values it predicts chaotic behavior and eventual extinction.

Why logistic ogive and not autocatalytic curve?, J Linacre
Following Malthus, Verhulst hypothesizes that small populations increase geometrically, because the supply of resources exceeds demand.
Verhulst writes "We will give the name logistic [logistique] to the curve" (1845 p.8).
In later work, Pearl exhorts researchers to use logistic curve or function in preference to autocatalytic curve because the latter is tied to a physical process.

If the local behaviour of the curve is exponential, while the local behaviour of the fitting verhulst is relatively flat (concave), it is unsurprising that large variation in parameters yield such small variation in goodness of fit.
I generated a verhulst curve, which becomes a comparison function, whereby the difference between the comparison function and actual production is taken to be related to the probability of shock.
If the verhulst was somehow 'adjusted' at shocks, then it would still progress according to a verhulst formula, however the meaning of the exact threshold will be local.

One way to model this assumption is to let the birthrate depend linearly on the size of the population as follows:
In 1845 the Belgian demographer Verhulst first popularized the logistic equation when he used it to model the population of the United States.
Verhulst used the 1790 through 1840 population data from the the U. census, under the assumption that U.S. population growth would continue to satisfy his logistic equation.

The Rise of Cities in North-West Europe (Adriaan Verhulst)
In The Rise of Cities in North-West Europe Adriaan Verhulst surveys urban developments between the Somme and the Meuse, from the fourth to twelfth centuries.
His approach is chronological, treating five periods in turn, and systematic, attempting to cover all the significant urban centres.
With better documentation, in the 11th and 12th centuries we can follow something of the processes of emancipation and industrialisation and the evolution of merchants' guilds, sworn communes, the Flemish metal and cloth industries, and foreign trade.

 X-next (Verhulst) Logistic Equation
The Xnext equation is also known the Verhulst model [after Pierre-Francois Verhulst, 1804-1849], and the logistic equation.
The fact that Verhulst published it sometime between 1838 and 1850 tells us the idea existed long before chaos theory became a formal study.
Logistic equations are ones that are iterated (calculated over and over), recursive (output of the last calculation is input for the next), and normalized (population size ranges from zero - extinction - to one - maximum conceivable population).
