Cylinder groups are self contained sections of a file system that are composed of inodes, data blocks, and bitmaps that indicate free inodes and data blocks.
file systems are "buffered" in the sense that resources are allocated to files and data is written asynchronously to files.
file systems are asynchronous in the sense that structural changes to the file system are not immediately written to disk.

VERITAS File System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Veritas File System, (or VxFS, called JFS and OJFS in HP-UX), is an extent-based file system that was the first commercial journaling file system, and was developed by VERITAS Software.
Cluster File System provides cache coherency and POSIX compliance across nodes, so that data changes are atomically seen by all all cluster nodes simultaneously.
Because Cluster File System shares the same binaries and same on-disk layout as single instance VxFS, moving between cluster and single instance mode is straightforward.

 File System Primer - CoolSolutionsWiki
EXT2 file system is the predecessor to the EXT3 file system.
As a result, this file system is one of the best to be used when data is to be directly migrated from Unix to Linux, and when training in volume and filesystem management is to be preserved within the IT staff.
The characteristics needed are a file system whose performance remains relatively constant regardless of the number of files that are in the volume, and that performs well with small files.

Using VERITAS File System on a DLPAR-enabled pSeries server
System administrators and developers might be interested in learning how there is no difference between using VERITAS Foundation Suite for AIX on a DLPAR-enabled pSeries server compared to any other pSeries server, partitioned or otherwise.
As discussed, since the file system was most likely not in need of additional memory, it did not therefore take advantage of it.
We captured file system performance data before and after each DR operation to assess the effect of the resource change as a result of the DR operation.

 File System Performance
File System performance is often a major component of overall system performance, and is heavily dependent on the nature of the application generating the load.
If they are adjacent, then the file system can initiate a read for the next few blocks as it reads the current block, and then when we come back for the next block it should have already been read in and we don't need to stop and wait.
A write to a file system that is not a multiple of the block size will result in a partial write of a block, which requires the old block to be read, the new contents updated and then the whole block written out again.

Quick Reference: AIX Journaled File Systems and Veritas File System
It has now introduced a second file system that is to run on AIX systems called Enhanced Journaled File System (JFS2), which is available in AIX Version 5.0 and later versions.
The earlier method, requiring a scan of the entire file system, is time-consuming, and can be a waste of time because only a small portion of the file system requires cleanup after a crash.
The write data is then transferred from the log file or device to its true file system location at a later time.

Veritas adds file system to Oracle clusters: Insight - ZDNet Australia
According to Veritas, this is the first cluster file system that lets enterprises dump their raw disk partitions when using an HP-UX 11i platform to run an Oracle9i Real Application Clusters (RAC), without losing any performance.
Neil Macehiter, research director at Ovum, says that although raw partitions generally improve the performance of a database--because it doesn't have to deal with the overhead of a file structure--managing the system is far more difficult.
Without a file system, administrators have no simple way to tell how much storage the database is consuming, which means routine tasks such as database backup and recovery can only be carried out by very experienced administrators.
