The Vermillion River originates in New Market Township in Scott County and travels 38 miles east across Dakota County before dropping 90 feet at the falls in the city of Hastings.
The Vermillion River, often referred to as a "prairie river," is a relatively slow flowing river that winds its way through alternating rural agricultural and developing suburban areas, through cultivated fields and pasture lands, forested areas and suburban backyards.
Although the Vermillion River is healthy enough to support trout, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists it as impaired for high levels of fecal coliform bacteria from the headwaters to the falls in Hastings.

When at the point (now in section 7), where the Dodd road crosses the Vermillion River, Captain Dodd was so impressed with the loveliness of the spot he told Cyrus Kingsley to build a log pen and stakeout a claim of one hundred and sixty acres for him.
District 47 is the only one of the eight school districts formed in the township during the past century, in which classes are still being taught.

Major roadways bordering or in Eureka Township include Interstate 35 to the west; Dakota C.R. 70 to the north; Dakota C.R. 86 to the south; Cedar Avenue, which bisects the township; and Dodd Boulevard, which runs north-south through the township and was one of the first surveyed roads in the state.
The board of supervisors is the governing body of the township, and is elected by direct ballot of eligible voters.

To the delight of trout fishermen and the chagrin of developers, Minnesota officials announced Wednesday that 20.5 more miles of the Vermillion River and tributaries are now clean enough to be designated a trout stream.
The Empire Wastewater Treatment Plant is building a $50 million pipeline, partly to keep the river cool and trout-friendly, partly to protect the banks of the river from erosion during flooding.
About 25 miles of the Vermillion River and its tributaries, roughly between Lakeville and Farmington, already is designated a trout stream.

For the purpose of this Ordinance, this shall be construed to mean any lake, pond, or flowage of 25 acres or more in size, or any river or stream with a total drainage area of two square miles or more, which has the potential to support any type of recreational pursuit or water supply purpose.
The official determination of the size and physical limits of drainage areas of rivers and streams shall be made by the commissioner.
