 PREVIEW: Who Is Robert Bartley?
Vermont Connecticut Royster, a North Carolinian who as a young reserve officer commanded a U.S. Navy destroyer in World War II, was a journalistic stylist, producing a literate, slightly old-fashioned editorial page that was true to the Jeffersonian tradition, from limited government to free trade.
Always on the alert for new talent, Royster spotted Bartley as a young reporter in the Journal's Chicago bureau (where he was hired in 1962 at age 24).
When Royster's successor suddenly and unexpectedly died in 1972, Bartley was given the title of editor (who traditionally supervised only the editorial page) at age 34.

It is entirely plausible that both accounts are true, for copy editors are the same everywhere, now and forever.

That being so, I suppose I can no longer claim to be a "liberal," at least not in the way the word is used in today's political lexicon.
The interesting question, IMHO, is not the meaning of "liberal." That is one thing in America--socialistic--and its opposite, as Vermont Royster noted, everywhere else.
The interesting question is, who changed the meaning of the word in America, and why only here?

A journalist, Vermont Royster told the 1967 class of Nieman Fellows, should be "a professional amateur." The extreme case is a foreign correspondent I once knew who laughed when I asked him if he was learning the language of the country to which he was assigned.
In his view it was not necessary, might even be a hindrance.
