A native of McAlister, New Mexico, Stephens batted and threw right-handed.
One of the strongest-hitting shortstops in major league history, Stephens compiled a.286 batting average with 247 home runs and 1174 RBI in 1720 games.
Stephens died of a heart attack in Long Beach, California at 48 years of age.

When you looked at what Vern achieved, and compare his stats to those of other shortstops of his generation, you get an idea just how dominant a player he was.
Maybe if Vern had played most of his career in NY and then become the worst announcer in the history of sports the veterans committee would have put him in.
Though Lou is a very interesting contrast to Vern in terms of his HOF credentials....Of course Lou had a lot of intangibles going for him.

After the age of 31, injuries kept Stephens out of the lineup most of the time and denied him the milestone homer and RBI totals that might have gained him more Hall of Fame consideration.
Stephens was dealt to the Red Sox with pitcher Jack Kramer.

Fred, a longtime fan of Stephens, was looking for info on him to try and see about getting him inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame.
The Red Sox Hall of Fame Class of 2006 includes infielder Vern Stephens (1948-52), righthander Ellis Kinder (1948-55), second baseman Jerry Remy (1978-84), first baseman George Scott (1966-71, 1977-79) and managers Joe Morgan (1988-91) and Dick Williams (1967-69).
