The Nobel Prize in Literature 1916 - Presentation
Inspired by national subjects from the very beginning, it succeeds in capturing the most genuine characteristics of national life; it depicts the destinies of the Swedish people in epic poems, which by the richness of their imagination, the sharpness of their contours, and their composition, are works of the highest order in Scandinavian literature.
What is characteristic in this conception of life, born of noble and unhappy experiences, is a proud and tolerant virility which constitutes the very essence of the suffering, the hope, and the intoxication of the poet, and a newly acquired capacity to reach the spiritual world by renunciation.
While Heidenstam was working on this epic about the life and character of the Swedes, his cult for man was taking shape, and one finds traces of it in the work.

In contrast to the socially conscious authors of the 1880’s, Heidenstam established himself as an aristocrat, contemptuous of the bourgeois audience, whose sole artistic responsibility was aesthetic, not ethical.
Though Heidenstam did more than anybody to change the situation, by the founding of the Swedish Writers’ Union in 1893 and by turning the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet into a forum for modern criticism in 1897, writers like Selma Lagerlöf and Gustaf Fröding could still succeed in combining a large audience with artistic status.
Though it could be argued that Heidenstam already had begun shifting from what appears to be a genuine feeling for ordinary people towards the abstract notion of the Nation, events during those frantic weeks in 1896 seem to have had a decisive alienating effect on him.

The essay deals with the last and, to a great extent, unexplored years of the life of Verner von Heidenstam (1859—1940), and in particular with the difficulties concerning the establishment and interpretation of his will.
The violation of Heidenstam's integrity involved among other things the eviction and deletion of his common-law wife and the simultaneous reintroduction of his first, lawfully wedded wife.
The main beneficiary of Heidenstam's will was the Övralid Foundation, which was assigned the task of administrating his estate, literary remains and fortune.
