Verneshot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The verneshot theory is that massive volcanic activity over thousands of square miles coincided with an impact event in the four cases described above.
Revision of the scale of the verneshot theory may be necessary.
The probability of artificial Verneshots accidentally causing the End of civilization (resolving the Fermi Paradox) is not calculated.

“Verneshots” and Interplanetary Lithopanspermia: A “Lava Lite”-like Earth-life Lift-off Mechanism
Here, it is hypothesized that not only could a Verneshot transport a globally dispersed mass of crust-mantle material, it also could shoot life-conveying boulders into interplanetary space, with obvious implications for astrobiology within our Solar System.
Verneshots are “…catastrophic carbon- and sulfur-gas-driven craton-lithospheric explosions fracturing a thick lithospheric column, even perhaps capable of shooting large terrestrial mass jets into suborbital trajectories in a natural analogue to the explosive transport mechanism first discussed by Jules Verne” [15].
Two event-processes will affect the mechanics of anticipated Verneshots: (1) anthropogenic earthquakes and (2) stress-relief tremors owing to the mantle-crust heating from intentional planetary movements, such as imposed acceleration, occurring in the absence of the Moon [18].

A verneshot is a hypothetical volcanic eruption event which launches an extremely large rock into a sub-orbital trajectory.
According to the Department of Marine Geodynamics at GeoMar, Kiel such an event could be triggered by an explosion caused by a mantle plume under a craton in an area of continental rift.
Verneshots are one possible cause for extinction level events.

 Verneshot Theory
This theory has been recently conceived and still dwells in its infancy, but it does have a great advantage over the others: it explains why an impact and continental flood basalts always coincide when the chances of both occurring simultaneously are infinitesimally small.
To make this theory valid, a mechanism had to be presented which would be capable of creating both the signs of a meteorite impact and continental flood basalts.
A Verneshot is caused when a mantle plume comes in contact with a craton.

mindcandy :: Did a 'Verneshot' kill the dinosaurs?
The name Verneshot comes from Jules Verne's book "From the Earth to the Moon" in which a huge cannon shoots astronauts into space.
Debris would rain down from the sky, and dust would blot out the sun to cause the same kind of climate changing effects as an impact from space.
A large piece of rock from a Verneshot blast landing on the Earth would produce a crater in the same way as an asteroid or comet.

The initial ‘shot’, as well as the subsidiary impacts in other parts of the globe, as the larger chunks hit the earth with huge force, would contribute to the climate disruptions blamed for mass extinctions.
Proponents of the Verneshot idea will now start searching for evidence in Siberia that will suggest that there really was such a giant ‘shot pipe’ associated with the volcanism.

The Gray Monk: Death in the islands
When it reaches a point at which the strain is too great, the plate fractures and a massive lava flow occurs at the fracture.
Simultaneously the disruption allows the high pressure hot gas stored in faults in the crust to burst out in a blowout the scientists have named a "Verneshot" after the Jules Verne cannon used to send a spaceship to the moon.
A big chunk of the crust is ejected as a missile and the gases erupt into the atmosphere, poisoning it and causing a "Nuclear" winter of debris shielding out the sun.

Think of all that lava erupting from the supervolcano, the magma lakes almost entirely drained, which means the neighboring crust sections are no longer supported by liquid rock and high pressure gas bubbles.
It's also interesting to note that there appears to be evidence for the verneshot theory already off the coast of Australia.

In 2004 Phipps Morgan, Reston and Ranero explored the possible consequences of a build-up of volatiles in plume-related magmas at the base of thick continental lithosphere beneath cratons, prior to the eruption of continental flood basalts.
First they emphasise that their concept of the tremendous power of a ‘Verneshot’ is not based on the explosive release of volatiles, but on the shock pressures associated with the sudden collapse of ~80 km tall pipes through which gas vented.
As regards the geochemical blend in impactite-related layers, dominated by iridium yet a dearth of other platinum-group metals, they cite evidence that very similar element proportions are released in the carbon- and sulfur-rich gas phases of plume-related volcanoes, as on Hawaii and Reunion.
