I content myself with the examination of poems selected from William Empson, Vernon Watkins, and Henry Reed.
However, what we recognize as Thomas in Watkins' verse is, perhaps, only their common bardic and Welsh ancestry.
The prosodical fashion of close stanzas and controlled meters holds with most of these poets; Watkins and Reed also favor a long line, something between Websterian blank verse and English hexameter.

Carcanet is one of the publishing houses that also represents to me the legend on a fountain in the home-town of my childhood: 'Drink and be thankful.'
VERNON WATKINS was born on June 27th, 1906, in Maesteg, South Wales.
The latter called Watkins: 'The greatest lyric poet of my generation.' Dylan Thomas called him: 'the most profound and greatly accomplished Welshman writing poems in English.'  In a Dark Time … The Eye Begins to See » Vernon Watkins
Of all the poetry teachers I had, Welsh poet Vernon Watkins, a guest professor for one quarter, may have been my favorite because his classes seemed like friendly discussions rather than lectures from above.
Amazingly, you could actually visit him during office hours and have a discussion with him without feeling that you were interrupting his day.
Perhaps "Demands of the Poet" captures a little of the sensitivity and passion that Vernon Watkins conveyed in his classes.
