Salon Books | "Love Trouble"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Published almost two years after the death of its author (at 56, of a brain tumor), the book is a chronicle of sorts of Geng's life, a self-portrait of one of the best-regarded humorists of the past few decades.
It's only enhanced by Geng's postscripts to each of the second section's essays, in which she divulges both the origin of the piece -- usually a newspaper clipping -- and the internal life that lent it its peculiar slant.
Still, the look inside her mind is compelling, as much for aspiring satirists as for readers who find themselves increasingly curious about the mind in which all of this clever wackiness incubated.

 Humor Came Her
As a new collection shows, Veronica Geng was among the funniest writers of her generation.
Geng died on Christmas Eve, 1997, as tough a cancer patient as she was a writer and editor.
Geng began working for The New Yorker in 1976, when the magazine still valiantly published epic monographs about orange crops, and the office still felt like a dysfunctional faculty lounge, with William Shawn as the presiding dean.

Amazon.fr : Love Trouble: New and Collected Work: Livres en anglais: Veronica Geng,Ian Frazier   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A compilation of two previously published collections, Partners and Love Trouble Is My Business, as well as newer work, this book confirms Geng as one of the most brilliant and encompassing satirists of the last few decades, providing readers unfamiliar with her writing with a concise volume of her caustic wit.
Geng skewers the media, literature, sports and economics, but she's at her best when tackling political topics.
Many of these function as self-consciously clear windows into Geng's thought processes and her friends' input (most notably, Ian Frazier, who also wrote the introduction), as well as hints of the climate of the New Yorker during the end of William Shawn's reign.

Geng (Partners) is continually amazed at life's vicissitudes, its gross unfairness, its unexpected comic moments and absurdities.
In 24 short, talkative, urbane pieces, all but four of which first appeared in the New Yorker, she sounds off on the arms race, the outrageous cost of higher education, wine snobbery, human bungling in a hi-tech age, luxury dog kennels.
Geng takes a premise and giddily runs with it ("I think Oliver North is the guy who married my sister"); the results are more often clever rather than truly witty.
