Ms Cherkasova, a journalist with the newspaper Solidarnost, was found stabbed to death in her apartment last October, at a time when she was investigating the alleged sale of arms by Belarus to Iraq.
Though an independent investigation concluded that her murder was a professional assassination, the authorities identified her 15-year-old son and chronically ill stepfather as the main suspects in the case and subjected them to months of harassment.
WAN said it would continue to monitor the case as part of its campaign to ensure that the murders of journalists worldwide are thoroughly investigated and that their killers are brought to justice.

Cherkasova was looking into the possibility of arms sales by the Belarusian government to Saddam Hussein, the press freedom organization said, but the person in charge of investigating her death, Vladimir Chumachenko instead ordered a new psychiatric examination of Cherkasova’s 15-year-old son, Anton Filimonov, on 31 January.

Veronika Cherkasova (Belarusian: Веранiка Чаркасава; Russian: Вероника Черкасова; Alternative spellings: Vieranika Charkasava, Wieranika Tscharkassava) - a Belarusian opposition journalist, brutally murdered in her apartment in Minsk on October 20, 2004.
Veronika had published a number of articles in Russian press that were sharply critical of the president (such as A Dandy President and Reporter on a Leash) and might have been perceived by Lukashenko as "defamation".
Veronika's 15 year-old son Anton Filimonov and her chronically ill stepfather Vladimir Meleshko were named two main suspects in the investigation.

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura today condemned the assassination of Veronika Cherkasova, a journalist for the independent Belarus newspaper Solidarnost, in Minsk on October 20.
According to the international press freedom organization, the International Press Institute, Ms Cherkasova was found dead in her apartment in Minsk where she had received close to 20 knife wounds.
Ms Cherkasova was collecting material for an article on the work of religious sects in Belarus.

Oleg Panfilov, head of the Center for Journalism in Extreme Situations, said that despite the fact that the name of Cherkasova's newspaper, which means Solidarity, sounds political in nature, Solidarnost could hardly be called an opposition newspaper.
Friends, colleagues and Belarussian officials said Cherkasova was far from an investigative or political journalist.
