village voice > theater > 'Vers la flamme' by Michael Feingold
Though emphatically not a dance piece, Vers la flamme is also not precisely a piece of mime, storytelling, narrative theater, or music drama.
Vers la flamme often slip imperceptibly into something like violence will be no surprise to people who've seen earlier Clarke pieces.
Vers la flamme is not an evening of Chekhov stories, but a piece "Conceived and Directed" by Martha Clarke; not a word of Chekhov, or anyone else, is spoken onstage, except for the name "Olga," called out repeatedly by a husband searching for his runaway wife.

"Vers la Flamme" is an impressionistic interpretation of the stories.

CNN - Martha Clarke: Art near 'la flamme' - June 17, 1999
Clarke's "Vers la flamme" is the key world-premiere offering at the 1999 American Dance Festival, a performance-and-training program that runs through July 23 on the campus of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
It's hard to imagine a more Clarke-ian title than "Vers la flamme," or "Toward the Flame." Clarke's body of work is an intense, well-muscled and seductive study in hopeful hearts and stubborn drives -- urges that can propel even the strongest of us toward trouble and the weakest of us toward self-destruction.
The festival recommends her "Vers la flamme" for adults: Neither in theme nor in the fleshly beauty of her performers has Clarke ever hesitated to choreograph what's on her mind.

Vers la flamme is menacingly controlled before the final conflagration, and the stream of chromatic ninths in the first of the Op 65 Etudes is always musically directed rather than made an excuse for obvious or flamboyant virtuosity.
Paterson-Olenich has contributed his own lively and informed essay, and the recordings (the first by a recently formed company intent on establishing only the finest musical values) are excellent.

The work’s thematic cell, a single two-note falling motive is a cogent and potent expression of desire, be it sexual or spiritual in nature.
Vers la Flamme’s development of the single desire motive, culminating in a tremulous vibrato, could portray the mounting excitement of a woman’s excited, half-desperate cries signaling approaching delirium (4:22).
One of his last works, Vers la Flamme is as misunderstood as anything Skryabin ever wrote.

June 11th was off to New York for rehearsals of Vers la Flamme and Irene Dowd’s Thrall, and then off to Duke University, Durham and The American Dance Festival, to dance Vers la Flamme.
My fond memories are of dancing with this extraordinary company of artists, of meeting Pina Bausch and of both walks in the gardens with Paola and going with her to the library to look at her father’s archives – very personal, very special.
The orchestrations and arrangements were still being worked on so the music we were using was just an approximation and quite different from what finally happened on stage – and that was a miracle of beauty.

I would be fascinated to hear another take of the “Poème vers la Flamme” with the notion that perhaps it’s the demanding appoggiaturas that are key to the struggle for the music’s release from the entrapment of the early pedal points.

In Skryabin’s lively poem Vers la Flamme (1914), a Utopian protest against the decay of western civilization, the piano no longer produced subtle bronze and earthy colours but heavenly rumbling and fine, elusive, scintillating echoes which tumbled down with an air of mystery reminiscent of his tenth sonata.

The opening B minor Fantasia was conceived on the same heroic scale as the two Beethoven sonatas and played with a muscular expansiveness.

Volodos could have taken us forward to the modernist repertoire to which the Scriabin naturally pointed.
