Another type of drama popular in medieval times was the interlude, which can be generally defined as a dramatic work with characteristics of the morality play that is primarily intended for entertainment.
Friedrich Hebbel wrote grimly naturalistic drama in the middle of the 19th cent., but the naturalistic movement is most commonly identified with the “slice-of-life” theory of Émile Zola, which had a profound effect on 20th-century playwrights.
Experimental dramas of the 1960s and 70s by such groups as Beck’s Living Theater and Jerzy Grotowski’s Polish Laboratory Theatre were followed by a mixing and merging of various kinds of media with aspects of postmodernism, improvisational techniques, performance art, and other kinds of avant-garde theater.

Poetry Knowledge Zone - Class 15 : Blank Verse by Smitha Chakravarthula
Blank verse or unrhymed iambic pentameter, which was widely used by Milton and Shakespeare in their poetry is the most popular form of poetry in English, probably because English language naturally falls in an iambic pattern and therefore it sounds very rhythmic and natural.
Blank verse has been called the most "natural" verse form for dramatic works, since it supposedly is the verse form most close to natural rhythms of English speech, and it has been the primary verse form of English drama and narrative poetry since the mid-Sixteenth Century.
Blank Verse, so called due to the absolute he absence of the rhyme which the ear expects at the end of successive lines, is the unrhymed measure of iambic decasyllable in five beats which is usually adopted in English epic and dramatic poetry.

But as Yeats was running out of time, hope for a great verse drama revived in the thirties with the advent of, among others, T. Eliot, W. Auden, and Christopher Fry, poets who managed a modernization of verse drama that gave it greater credibility and a potential for development.
In the drama, he also seemed better able to realize his own ideal, as stated in “Tradition and the Individual Talent,” of becoming the means to express a tradition, however much his individual talent might alter the tradition.
With an increased flexibility of verse, soliloquies and lyrical duets eliminated, elements of ritual and choric speaking reduced, symbolic figures given a naturalistic base (the spiritual advisor is here a psychiatrist; the chorus are friends of the family and speak individually), Eliot’s invasion of the West End became more subversive.

 Introduction to Prosody (Blank Verse)
Blank verse was introduced into English verse by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, who along with his older friend Sir Thomas Wyatt also introduced the sonnet and other Italian poetic forms into English poetry in the sixteenth century.
Poems written in blank verse are often divided into "verse paragraphs" of varying lengths, as distinct from stanzas, which usually have regular lengths and are defined by their rhyme scheme and metrical pattern.
Shakespeare is the most notable practitioner of blank verse as a dramatic form, and his plays are, in fact, written predominantly, though not entirely, in blank verse.
