		Versus made director Ryuhei Kitamura a name to watch for cult-film fans, and Media Blasters released three domestic versions through its Tokyo Shock line: a one-disc standard edition; a one-disc, unrated director’s cut; and this loaded two-disc special edition of the unrated version.
		Versus, though basically serious as popcorn entertainment goes, has a more than a touch of the quirkiness found in many Japanese movies, and most of the cast does a fine job handling the subtle touches Kitamura throws to heighten either the humor or the tension.
		Versus is difficult to describe, as words really fail to capture the entertainment value of this nonstop action flick.

		Get a few friends together who are in the mood for crazy Japanese action zombie splatterfest, slip your brains into neutral, and sit around enjoying the mindless violence and unintentional comedy of one of the weirdest zombie films since Brain Dead.
		If there's any hope to understanding Versus, it's going to be a collaborative effort with the entire Mutant staff, locked in a board room, pouring over flow charts and fuzzy photographs.
		Versus can be really cool or incredibly trying, based on your mood and level of geekitude, and I'm not about to take a gamble with such a chancy title, unless the Zombie Samurai make the play-offs.

		What really makes 'Versus' though is the immense amount of action that includes guns, swords and hand-to-hand combat, all of which borrow heavily from the Hong Kong movie scene.
		Certain sequences take the Hollywood route and cut the action just when an exciting move is being executed but luckily it is in the minority and is still a far cry from being as bad as some of it's US counterparts.
		Overall, 'Versus' is an outstanding effort from start to finish with guns, guts and glorious kung fu delivered in a single, stylish package.

		"Versus" is, at best, about 75 minutes worth of material stretched to nearly two hours, and while it gleefully thumbs its bleeding nose at political correctness and the Lieberman/McCain crusade against screen violence, there's simply too little and too much at all the wrong places to secure any longevity on the cult circuit.

		Strangely, it often switches before you're even aware that enemies have detected you, occasionally making the soundtrack a more effective danger signal than the marine's motion detector.
