Vehicle Assembly Building - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Vehicle (originally Vertical) Assembly Building, or VAB, is a very large building at NASA 's Kennedy Space Center, halfway between Jacksonville and Miami, and due east of Orlando on Cape Canaveral, on the Atlantic coast of Florida.
It was originally built to vertically assemble the stages of the Saturn V rocket for the Apollo program.
One indicator of the building's scale is that each of the stars on the American flag painted on the building is 6 feet (1.8 m) across and the stripes are large enough to drive a tour bus on.

The Vehicle Assembly Building by Jim Cornish
It was originally constructed to assembly the Saturn V rockets of the Apollo program during the late 1960's and 1970's.
The Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), the most impressive building at the spaceport, consists of a high-bay area 525 feet tall, and a low-bay area 210 feet tall, and a four story launch control center (LCC) which is connected to the high bay by an enclosed bridge.
Assembly, or integration, of the Shuttle vehicle is completed in the largest building at KSC, and one of the largest in the world, the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB).

The earliest plans for the VAB envisioned a circular assembly building with a turntable to position the transporter.
Since a major reason for the remote assembly building was protection from the weather, operations personnel opposed the open concept.

The Vehicle Assembly Building, built for the vertical assembly of Saturn launch vehicles, is the heart of Launch Complex 39 and was modified to support the assembly of the space shuttle.
The external tank is hoisted vertically from the checkout cell by the 250-ton high bay crane and transferred to the mobile launcher platform in High Bay 1 or 3 for mating with the already-assembled solid rocket boosters.
The distance from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Complex 39-A is 3.4 miles and 4.2 miles to Launch Complex 39-B. The roadway is built in three layers with an average depth of 7 feet.

All major sections of the Apollo/ Saturn V are vertically assembled in the high-bay area.
To maintain the protective environment of the building, doors had to be designed for these huge openings-doors that could withstand winds of 125 miles per hour and could be opened and closed in a 63 mile-per-hour wind.

One indicator of the building's scale is that each of the stars on the American flag painted on the building is 6 feet (1.8 m) across.
The most extensive damage ever recorded occurred during Hurricane Frances in September 2004, when about 1,000 10 × 40 foot (3 × 12 m) aluminum panels were blown off the building, resulting in about 40,000 ft²; (3,700 m²) of new openings in the sides.

During Space shuttle build-up operations inside the VAB, integrated SRB segments are transfered from nearbay SRB assembly and checkout facilities, hoisted onto a Mobile Launcher Platform in High Bays 1 or 3 and mated together to form two complete SRB s.
The orbiter is then towed over from the Orbiter Processing Facility to the VAB transfer aisle, raised to a vertical position, lowered onto the Mobile Launcher Platform and then mated to the rest of the stack.
When assembly and checkout is complete, the crawler-transporter enters the High Bay, picks up the platform and assembled shuttle vehicle and carries them to the launch pad.

The most imposing building at KSC is the VAB— currently called the vehicle assembly building, formerly called the vertical assembly building.
It *used* to be the largest building in the world (in terms of cubic feet of space); the Saturn rockets of the Apollo missions stood straight up inside of the building.
The VAB is where the shuttle is brought after processing (which takes place in one of three other buildings nearby), and it's hoisted on a crane to an upright position and payloads are placed in the cargo bay.
