Vertigo (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vertigo was founded in the wake of DC's successful "mature" comics of the late 1980s, beginning with Saga of the Swamp Thing and continuing with Watchmen, Hellblazer and The Sandman.
The Vertigo concept emphasized on the supernatural rather than the super-human and can be seen as the "real" world of the DC Universe.
Vertigo has proven influential on the comic book industry, particularly because of its success with sales of trade paperbacks (often called "graphic novels").

DC Universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The concept of a shared universe was originally pioneered by the DC Comics (originally known as National Periodical Publications) and in particular by writer Gardner Fox.
As a result, almost once per decade since the 1980s, the DC Universe experiences a major crisis that allows any number of changes from new versions of characters to appear to a whole reboot of the universe, restarting nominally all the characters into a new and modernized version of their lives.
The DC Universe is composed of a number of different dimensional planes, most notably parallel earths (see Multiverse) but the latter were eliminated when reality was altered by the Anti-Monitor.

The Vertigo Tarot   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Vertigo is an imprint of DC Comics, the creator of superhero legends such as Superman, Batman, Aquaman, The Green Lantern, and a universe of other characters.
In 1993 Vertigo was born, an experiment dedicated to creating adult titles of science fiction, horror, dark fantasy and the occult.
The Vertigo Tarot was produced in a quantity of 5000, which was soon sold out to collectors and dealers.

 Filmtracks: Vertigo (Bernard Herrmann)
Vertigo (Joel McNeely conducting) This rendition of Bernard Herrmann's original score for Vertigo by Joel McNeely and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is almost as classic as the original.
The thing to remember about Vertigo, of course, is that there's a lot of music beyond the title sequence, the "Scene d'Amour," and the final two disastrous falls.
But nevertheless, Vertigo, partly because of its undeniably important and prominent role in the film, is one of Bernard Herrmann's very best scores, and this re-release is a wonderful addition to any classic film score enthusiast's collection.

One way Black Orchid stands apart from the herd of Vertigo books is the shading in George Freeman's color.
Where most comic book color is flat and even (except in the rare cases where pencil artists add their own color) the colors in Black Orchid are rich with shades and textures, adding a dimension of reality to the fantasy world in which the characters play out their fate.

evandorkin: Failures in Freelancing Part 6
Those of you familiar with the comic know that it is comprised of about 18 sections, each based on a different DC universe, style or publishing period (such as the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Animated Universe, the Super Friends Universe, etc).
I wanted to include the Vertigo characters in it, since I was going for as many of those universes as I could cram into the book.
The Vertigo imprint/"universe" is really just an R-rated corner of the "regular" DC Universe, the fl sheep of the Universe that proper action figure-collecting folks don't speak about in polite company.

Vertigo isn't in DC continuity, just like Wildstorm isn't either, they are like subcompanies with their own comics.
But The Sandman, for example, was; Lucifer gave up Hell in The Sandman (a Vertigo title), and this change was reflected in Demon (a non-Vertigo title), and Spectre (another non-Vertigo title) And since Lucifer stars a character from The Sandman, it is presumably also in continuity.

The Vertigo League, in turn, would have to come AFTER that era, so that Tim Hunter would not possibly be available for the team-up.
The Vertigo influence is obvious; however, this comic book crossover was published by Marvel, not DC, and is therefore not included.

Vertigo has always been called "the dark corner of the DC universe", btu the creator owned books don't interact with DC proper...and pretty much the normal Vertgo books don't interact so that they can keep the mature readers stufgf separate from the DCU stuff.
In essence, when the Sandman interacts with characters from the DC universe, in the DC universe, it is a part of the DC Universe.
Preacher, by contrast, is clearly not set in the DC Universe, although there was a lengthy theory that the angel and demon couple had previously occurred in Hellblazer (they hadn’t; Ennis was reusing ideas).

Nobody left the DC universe (as a big concept, not as defined as 'those comics edited by Mike Carlin') when Vertigo was started; SANDMAN 5, SWAMP THING, ANIMAL MAN 1-20, didn't un-happen." An imprint like Vertigo is extremely valuable, because it really does draw in readers who would otherwise ignore a book altogether.
Anyway, DC seems to have a lacuna where comics set outside the DC Universe are either shoehorned into a brand where they don't really belong (like LOSERS and ASTRO CITY) or blithely dumped in the DC Universe section of the catalogue in complete disregard of their contents (like CAPER and FALLEN ANGEL).

Hellblazer has always been as much about the characters and their relationships as it is about the action, and that soap-opera nature has a huge appeal to me as it invites me to invest care and thought into characters and root for them even though I fear they may come to a violent end.
