Their 'vermin' classification and the perceived negativity towards this monkey resulted in very little interest shown towards it and inturn, had created an inaccurate image of this wonderful and ancient ‘Old World’ primate that is indigenous to South Africa.
At that time they believed that their first priority was to provide a sanctuary for vervet monkeys that were in the hands of the public and to save confiscated orphaned primates from death by providing the authorities with an alternative to killing.
Over a period of three years Arthur specifically observed the behaviour of a troop of vervet monkeys in the Sordwana bay area to establish how a troop raised and weaned it's young so that this ‘natural behaviour’ could be simulated in their rehabilitation programme to cater for orphaned babies.

After a series of habituation experiments designed to test if the vervets responded to differences in relevant symbolic meaning rather than acoustic similarity, Seyfarth and Cheney concludes, "Our findings suggest that when one vervet monkey hears another vocalize, the listener forms a representation of what that call means" (126).
